The only facility in the federal system that has a sex-offender treatment program is in Butner, NC. I had spoken with the director of that program before I entered the system and was not given anything that would make me believe that it would be safe to enter that program. It is located in the medium level facility of FCI Butner, and inmates in the program are NOT segregated from the general population. Based on the experience I had of being discovered in a low facility and being driven off the compound (ultimately to another state), I can not see how going into this program can possibly be safe. I chose to enter a regular program outside the system when I was released.

Actually thats not the case. Sex offenders are designated by security classification just like anyone else. While not eligible for camp, So's will go anywhere from a USP down to an FCI. There are designated facilities with different security levels that offer the Sex Offender treatment Program in different regions. This link will give the locations

Federal SOTP Locations

All SO treatment inmates were moved from Butner. Here's some recent info from the BOP:

The Bureau of Prisons maintains a comprehensive sex offender management strategy,
implemented to effectively manage its population of sex offenders, and manage the risks posed
by these offenders to the general public. With the passage of the Walsh Act, as codified in
30 18 U.S.C. § 3621(f), Sex Offender Management, the BOP has further expanded its monitoring,
evaluation, and treatment programs for sex offenders. As required by the Walsh Act, a
specialized sex offender program is offered in each BOP region. Inmates with a history of sexual
offenses may be designated to the Sex Offender Management Program (SOMP), at one of six
institutions: FMC Devens; United States Penitentiary (USP) Marion; USP Tucson; Federal
Correctional Institution (FCI) Seagoville; FCI Petersburg; and FCI Marianna
. Assignment is
made in accordance with the security level of the individual.

Everything I read still lists Marion as a USP. I thought it was changed to a FCI. Anyone know?

They've changed some USP's to medium facilities but they still retain the name "USP." Just to confuse people, is my guess.

Petersburg has a Sex Offender Management Program (SOMP), not a Sex Offender Treatment Program (SOTP). Currently, Devens is the only facility designated as a treatment program, but no treatment is being given at this time.

How rough are mediums compared to the other levels?

Can sex offenders serve terms in camps in the federal system?

It all depends on which medium and no, SO's have a PSF which prevents camp status
