Default Federal Medical Center - FMC Rochester Information

Hello everyone,

Someone please help me. I am new to the forum and am in dire need of some information on (Federal Medical Center) Rochester, Minnesota. Please, please, I really need to know what the scoop is on the place from the inmates position. Someone dear to us is on his way there for 8 months.

Has anyone been there? Please, any information at all will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Paralegal123

Try this site for at the very least visiting information... I will see if I can find out a bit more in a little while and of coarse I am sure someone else will give you some more information.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply! Unfortunatly, I have already been through all of the sites on the internet concerning FMC Rochester. What I am really looking for is what the place is really like from an insiders perspective. I appreciate anything you can offer.

Sincerely,
Paralegal123

Paralegal123, This is where my fiance is now. By now you may have already found out more info but he calls me regularly and says it is a very nice place and he is treated well so far. He has been there for several months and is serving 15 years unless his resentencing helps us out. I have heard nothing bad from him about this place. Except it's cold! LOL He is cold natured anyway being from the south originally. He even talked about getting to watch new movies on the weekends. If there is anything in particular you want to know I can ask him. Hope this helps a little.

Default My husband is just started his sentance at the FMC

Hi my name Sheila and I just brought my husband to the FMC in Rochester,MN. I don't have any information yet but I will be visiting as soon as I possibly can. My probation officer use to work there and told me that its better than most. She said that the inmates there that have been somewhere else know they have it good there. And because of this inmates don't usually cause alot of trouble either. If you want I can get back to you after my first visit. I will be talking to him if you have any questions you want me to ask.

Hi I just found this forum and this is my first time here. I dropped my boyfriend and also the father of my 5 year old son at Rochester Medical Center on December 1st, 2005. He started his 21 month sentence. It was the hardest day of my life walking away from someone you love and you wont be able to kiss, hold his hand or even call him on the phone whenever you needed to hear from him. I made it through a whole month and still having some bad days. Thank goodness for my family who I live with now who has been a great help with our son and great support for me. I have visited my boyfriend 2 times this month. The first time I went there to visit I was little nervous and didn't know what to expect. The visiting room is an open room were you can hold hands and be able to have some physical contact with them while visiting. My first visit there I visited him for about 3 hours. They also have some vending machines for people to have coffee, soda, and get something to eat. The place looks real clean and the guards seem real nice and polite to the visitors and the inmates. My boyfriend says its not bad at all and has been participating in some guitar classes and is looking to get a job there. He also says that in alot of ways its better then county jail. Also I have a question has anyone hear more about the H.R.3072 Bill that is in the legislative to see if it will pass to reinstate federal parole. If anyone has I would love to get some updates. I am praying everyday that it will pass. If anyone needs more information about how the Rochester FMC is I will be happy to get any information.

Default Hi

Hi,
I just thought I would pass on what I have heard about the FMC in Rochester. I grew up in Rochester and a friend of mine that I went to school with has been a guard there since it opened. According to him, the prisoners there are all treated wonderfully. They all get medical treatment from doctors and specialists from the world renouned Mayo Clinic It is very rare that there is ANY violence at all. They even have a little putting green for phys theapy in the summer and many things to do in the winter. The FMC is even more relaxed than the Fed Prison Camps which I am finding out that if you have to be in prison, that is where you want to be. The old evangilist Jimmy Baker was there for his sentence. Do you live close to Rochester? If not, it is a nice clean city to live in, you might want to consider moving there. I am sorry I can't help more with this but this site is great and I am sure you will be getting more responses soon.

Tommy G.

Default MN Prison

From my understanding i think someone with your health issues would be better off at Waseca.

Its funny revisiting this thread after posting in it back in 2006 when I was on my way to Rochester! Wow, its been quite a ride. But I do have alot to say about FMC Rochester...

First, please don't believe anything that anyone says when they say "I've heard" or "a friend said" or my favorite, "a guard I know that works there", and they proceed to tell you what a country club the prison in question is. I heard all the good things that was said about Rochester too, and some of it, in fact, is true. Yea, there is some really good selling points for Roch. But there is alot of negative points too. And I plan to debunk all the myths about Roch. in this thread.

1. Its next to the MAYO clinic and the inmates get better care than regular law abiding people! While its true, the Mayo clinic is practically next door, the much vaunted medical treatment is a myth. Sure, some inmates receive treatment there, but not all, and only in very specific circumstances. Also, Mayo gives Roch. a "wish list" of what they need "practice" on for their medical students...yes, Roch inmates are guinea pigs for Mayo interns and thats a fact. When i was there, they wanted "knees" to operate on...didn't matter what was wrong, but if you had a knee issue, the Roch "docs" recommended surgery. So theres your great Mayo treatment.
*Interesting side note, and not sure who knows this, but FMC Rochester has "secret" tunnels underneath the facility that go all the way to the Mayo clinic, almost a mile away. I've been down there, and i've seen them, endless tunnels, going in all directions. I was told that sometimes they use them to transport high profile inmates to Mayo for treatment...

2. The food is good! For the most part, the food was good at Rochester. Sure, there were meals, and on a regular basis, that were bad, but the portions were large, they had a salad bar, various beverages to choose from up until about the time I left, then they only had bland tea for weeks on end in the drink machines at mainline. On the 4th of July, the food was flat out delicious. I couldn't believe how good it was. Inmates got extra time to prepare the food and you couldn't complain. Now this was before they switched to the national menu, where all facilities eat the same thing every day, but I caught the tail end of "pride in the kitchen" and a bit of creative license. Rochester has a pretty good commisary selection as well, lots to choose from, and when combined with mainline food, you could eat pretty well overall.

3. Staff is wonderful, they are nice to the inmates at Rochester! Its like this, just as you have asshole inmates, you have cool inmates too. Admin staff were mostly jerks. Medical staff, on the other hand, was a mix. You had some genuinely nice people that treated inmates like people, and you had some that hated inmates and was just there to collect a check. My real complaint was with the admin staff and the teams. My team consisted of Counselor Lewis, a drunken loser that routinely shirked his job responsibilities and gave inmates the run-around. My case manager, ms. Hahn, a two-faced, lying bitch that told you one thing, and did the exact opposite only to leave you stuck in a situation. The unit manager was ok, but clueless and ineffective. The guards varied. There were a couple notorious guards that all inmates feared or dreaded, the one that comes to mind first was known as "Cowboy", and then there was the "Count Nazi" in the hospital. Some guards were indifferent, some were too gung ho, but I don't remember any that were "cool".
The main thing to know is that the admin staff has been used to preferential treatment in the BOP for a long time, they value their "gem" of the BOP title and they think they are special. They also run the place like a little private kingdom, and if you try to do anything they don't "normally do", you will run into big problems. One doctor told me, off the record of course, that medical inmates files and petitions and bps routinely get filed in the trash...they do it on a whim, or simply to prevent you from getting ahead in your endeavor. He told me that was happening to me as well. That made me fight all the harder against them, and in the end, I won. I proved to them I was eligible and qualified for RDAP, then I made them transfer me to a camp so I could take it. They said that hasn't happened in 20 years...they told me that at my last team meeting, days before I was transferred via medical jet to CO. They were not happy. I didn't gloat, although I wanted to. I discovered how petty and vindictive they are there early on, so I didn't want to provoke them now that I had won. IF your a medical inmate, be prepared to fight for your RDAP if you want it or are eligible for it. It won't be easy. They actually have routine tricks they use on inmates to foil their attempts and progress towards RDAP, I've seen them do it to others...

I'll cont. this later, hope this helps someone going there..

hey sandwiches,
i was there from july 06-oct 07.
cowboy was a prick. there was also the c/o for 2-1 i cant remember her name. short butch hair, nazi. i feel like she was transferred or made lt though in late 07.

there was only one "cool" c/o but i don't remember his name either. and it probably wouldnt be doing him any favors to give it out on here anyway. i remember a few occasions with him. another inmate and i had a bet for 2 books that a certain movie wasn't based on anything real. this officer let us stand behind him in the office and he googled information about it until the bet was settled.

another time he walked in in the middle of a poker game, and he was just made some comment about "you better hope youre not bluffing!" "whos winning?"

also bartlow or barlow on 2-2 was pretty relaxed. he was cool in the way that if you didnt make any trouble for him he didnt give a damn.

Default Want some cheese with that wine?

Mr. 2Sandwiches-
You sound like a whiner and carrying on like this makes inmates look bad--I guess that's the difference between a convict and an inmate. Had you done time anywhere else you'd know how good you had it there. YOU WERE IN PRISON! It's not supposed to be fun. They're GUARDS! They aren't supposed to be your friends or be cool. I wonder what you learned about yourself during your last bit? How did you change? What are your dreams?

Police / Guard / Correction Officer Bashing:
While we encourage full disclosure, investigation and the sharing of relevant information relating to abuses by Institutional staff (management, guards, jailers, CO’s,etc), blatant and unprovoked bashing of these people is not allowed. Please refrain from derogatory name calling as well. Further, it is a violation of PTO membership to go to any forum or site (ETC) where Correctional Officers are known to congregate and incite problems that may follow you back to the PTO website. If it is found that any member of PTO has gone to another website and created a problem, that then follows them back to our community, that member will be banned immediately.
