Question Question @ indigent status

[i]I have the most unusual question and I think this may be the right place to ask it. I went to see my ex-pain-in-the-rear Sat. and of course he asked me for funds. Well, when he first asked I told him I would send him 20, but at the time I could only send half of that. So, when he asked Sat. I told him I could send the other 10, but of course he wants more than that!!!(Jerk!) (He's trying to snow me, I'm sure)......he's telling me that the only reason he asked for more than that is because the monies are taken for his use of the indigent services!!! I am so positive he's full of it, but this state jail is ran so different from the one I worked at as a co. Plus, I saw women being let in wearing sandals, flip-flops, and capris!!! I have never seen that on any other unit ever, nor heard of it! Anyways, have y'all ever heard of such a thing as an inmates funds being withdrawn for their use of indigent services???? I do know that certain types of charges such as medical may be withdrawn, but that's the only kind I know of. Thanks for any help in this!!!![i]

In Louisiana, inmates have to pay $5.00 for dr. visits. The facility takes it out of their bank whenever they have it.

I do know they can request indigent status when they have no funds at all. My son has done it several times. He is allowed 5 stamps per week. They are given tooth p\owder instead of toothpaste. Maybe when they do have funds they have to repay the stamps, etc. I will ask my son.

I believe that anything they use while indigent is taken out of their account when they do get money.

My husband told me that whenever he has requested something under indigent status, and then he received funds, they have taken the money to pay back the funds used under indigent status. This time he just might be telling you the truth. After all, this is TDCJ! As for the capris, they are allowed now, I don't know about flip flops, but I have seen open toed shoes at my husband's unit. I wrote and sent a letter from my doctor verifying a medical condition asking for permission to wear sandals before I did it.

I do know that for my husband this is true. everytime he uses "anything" thru indigent has to be paid back.. and trust me they take their money first whenever I finally put money on his books...

Val is right. My husband told me that is the way it works and he works in the commissary, so no, he wasn't lying to you. You must be visiting Dawson because I've seen it all there. They even let in a boy that was over the age of 12 with a plain white t-shirt!

Hey ladies, thanks for all your input and help on this question. I got a call from Wayne last night (true love!) and asked him. At the unit he's on they only take out for certain medical things. I plan to call here and ask them, also.

OPEN TOES AND EVERYTHING THE GURNEY UNIT WOULDNT ACCEPT.--they do where my husband is now. The money situation cant help---I refused to send him money when he left us in debt. The state of Texas wanted him that bad--------they can take care of him. He left after he maxed out my credit cards----------although I know now he has a chemical imbalance-----too bad there was no one here to send me money......i told him straight up. You have a roof over your head and food---He knows why I did it.........However he will be here in 13 days and in 31 months Ive sent him 70 dollars-------but I do have a home for him to come to that will be ours. If the state of Texas wants him they can support him--------Ive got it going on here!!!!!!!!! Thats just my way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

at anyrate GOOD LUCK

I know I wear capri pants to the Segovia Unit. I have worn sandals in there also. I keep another pair in the car just in case they change the rules. It is not like they keep the visitation rooms all that cool in those places. Capri pants also at the Gist Unit, no sandals last I heard.

I have a pp that was on indigent status, and he says he now owes the state of TX back for his use of it. So, I believe, yes, they have to pay back what ever they use while they are on indigent status when they evntually do get some money.

Where my husband is at they have taken money out of his account to pay back the indigent fund when he's used it. I have worn capri's, flip flops and sandles before but I keep a change of clothes in the car just in case. Once I was sent back because of the dress I had on. Worn it a million times up there but that day the CO decided that it was too short. It came to the middle of my knees, not below my knees. Even the guards at the car check in were shocked. Had to explain why I was leaving and would be right back. NO big deal though, it really was more low cut then short in my opinion so I had been pushing it wearing it anyway.
