Default Personal Radios & Televisions Allowed?

I was just reading on the California thread that personal radios and televisions can be ordered and delivered to our guys?? Is this right? If so, I want to do that!

Hello,

Below is a website that is approved to send special packages to California Prisons. Once in the website, scroll down until you see the Special Package section. You will have to see if this company ships to the institution that you want to send sometime to. Not all vendors serve every prison. It is my understanding that they can receive a special package every 30 days. Check with the specific prison to make sure what their rules are.

Hope this helps.

Not all the prisons allow personal tv's either so check with the prison your loved one is at to make sure before you send it. I know we are still waiting approval from the warden for the prison my guy is at

Is there a specific vendor that carries the tv or radio or does it depend on what facility has which vendor? My husband hasn't transferred from the county jail yet but I'm trying to get all the info I can...

There are two types of packages: Quarterly Packages and Special Packages. Special Packages just changed. They now only have televisions, radios, cassette players and CD players. The only vendor I found so far is accesscatalog.com. Click on "Shop Now" and then scroll down to California SPO Program. Click on the picture and then you can select the institution you are interested in. Special Packages can be sent every 30 days. Now that only electronics are available to order, I don't think we will be sending too many Special Packages... How many Televisions do they need!!!

Here si some information on quarterly pacakges. Items that were on the Special Package List are now included on the Quarterly Pacakge lists. I am not the expert on the quarterly packages that can be sent, since I just sent my first one today. There are 5 vendors approved for the State of California that you can use. All of them won't work for all prisons. You have to go into each one and see if the prison you are interested is on the vendor's list.

http://www.jbimpackt.com
http://www.packagesrus.com
http://www.walkenhorst.com

I just used californiaqp.com (It's name is Access Securepak). I filled out an order online. It was easy. Paid with a VISA card.

You are allowed to mail one 450 oz. package of goodies to your loved one once a quarter. That means, for example, for 1st Quarter (January 1 through March 31) you can mail him a package any time during the quarter. Don't wait until the last minute. Some prisons now want the package to arrive before the last day of the quarter. It used to be as long as it was ordered before midnight on the last day, it was ok. May not be the case anymore for some or all of the prisons. It's better to order a package as soon as the new quarter begins. So, every 3 months, you can send a package.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info Charme. That is extremely helpful. Can they get a special package and a quarterly during the same time and do they combined have to add up to the amount of total weight they are allowed in?

BLuft,

My understanding is that the 450 oz is for the quarterly package only. The special package can be sent every 30 days. Both packages can be ordered at the same time, but the weight isn't counted as part of the 450 oz. It has to be two separate orders and from the two different catalogs.

What has happened very recently is that a lot of items that were on the Special Package list like shoes, clothing, fans, etc. have been taken off the Special Package list and have become part of the Quarterly Package item list. So, items that didn't use to count as part of the 450oz, now count. I am not sure why the change was made, but it has made the Special Packages pretty useless over time. After you have purchased a television, CD Player, Cassette Player and/or headphones for your loved one, there is not much left that you would purchase for them.

Hope this information is helpful.

I just ordered a SPECIAL PACKAGE for my son a week ago Monday. Where he is in Susanville, they can still get shoes except the sandals he wanted was changed to the quarterly package, so I just picked another pair. It looks like everything else stayed more or less the same for the SPECIAL PACKAGE.. He cannot receive a tv where he is, though......geesh, I wish I could keep up with them...with all the changes all the time!

Thanks so much for all the info. I'm not sure where my husband is going to be held yet. He should leave for reception any day now but with all your info I am ready to send him in whatever they allow.
