Hi lilsquaw. To be fair, there are very few positives about Prisons. They are not suppose to be a good place to be. But, some are a lot worse than others. There are a lot of problems at Corcoran State. It is listed as one of the worst of the top 5 for abuse by the Guards and other Personnel. It doesn't seem to matter what Level the Inmate is. Corcoran has 4 Levels and the SHU, which stands for Security Housing Unit. This is where the most violent Criminals are kept. There are also some who have reported a crime committed against them on one of the 4 Levels. Since the are single or in some cases, double celled, and are only allowed out of their cells double chained, is a safer place to be housed. Since these Inmates have "snitched" on another Inmate, they wouldn't last long on the Mainline, which is the 4 Levels. My son has been through hell in Protective Custody, (PC) since he reported being attacked and raped in his cell when he got back from worked one night. A Guard was involved. Knowing what would happen if he reported it, he kept quiet for three days, then just lost it and couldn't let it go. Visiting used to be most positive. Right now, it has been changed to Sat. & Sun. only. They are trying to get Fridays back. Where my son is, you have to have an appointment. Call (559) 992-8800, ext. #5720 from 10 - 2 to find out if you need one. If you don't get through in the first 20 minutes to make an appointment, they are usually filled. The dress code is strict. To be safe, I always wear a printed loose top with sleeves and grey, white, black, or tan long pants or a skirt that is just above my knees. No levis are allowed. 1 car key and it can not be on a chain. A wedding ring is ok, but I'd refrain from wearing any other jewelry. Rules could change from day to day. You can take a package of unopened Kleenex, and $30 in quarters. There are vending machines inside to get food and drinks. My son loves the pizza's. If you need medication or have other medical needs, you must have a note from your Doctor stating these items are necessary. I have a lung disease and am in a wheelchair, on oxygen, and need to keep my Inhaler with me. I also have a metal plate in my arm. You just don't want to give them any reason to hold up your time to visit. As far as existing inside those "Walls", it's the same as with all Prisons. Don't make friends or trust anyone there, mind your own business, don't reveal personal things about yourself or your friends or family, stand tall and don't whine or whimper, don't complain about things you can do nothing about, and follow the rules. I hope this helps. Ironically, my son has been endorsed to be transferred to SVSP. What can you tell me about that Prison :>)?

Corcoran and SATF-SAP are two separate and distinct prisons, they share nothing in common, except the plot of land they occupy. Due to the prisons expansion project, SATF was built on land originally purchased for Cal State Prison, Kings County South, which later became Corcoran. It’s the same as CVSP and ISP, same piece of land, different prisons

SVSP is not bad at all compared to Corcron. The visiting is not bad at all. you just have to make sure that you are there early to get your pass. you can wear jewlery all you want and you can wear black jeans. Corc. is one of the worst prisons in Ca that Pel bay and cala pat. SVSP is just known for long lock downs and it rocks like other prisons but it is not as bad as some. my fiancee has been there for 3 years he would rather stay there then go to corc. his points go down this summer and might move to RJD or centanela witch is closer to me.
