I have read a couple of posts on here about whether or not someone should use a prison consultant. My case has been going on for well over a year now. I was referred to Mr. Novak by a federal defense attorney working on a co-defendants case. He had acquired Mr. Novak for consulting purposes in the past and was very impressed with his knowledge of the federal system. After calling and speaking to David I decided to retain his services in the winter of 2003. Keep in mind I had a very experienced federal defense attorney(who cost me alot of money). Once I hired David he contacted my attorney and told him that he was on board. I cannot speak for every defense attorney, but there was alot of information that David provided to my attorney that was extremely valuable in my case. David assisted in the plea negotiations, the objections to the pre sentence report, David constructed the whole defense sentencing memorandum for my attorney, and is currently working on facility designation. From the very beginning David started laying the ground work for placement in the RDAP program. He made it very clear that the final decision is up to the bop, but he has informed me of questions that are asked in the interview and what to be prepared for while I am incarcerated. David and I agreed on a price from the very beginning, once he realized that he would not be using all the money that I had paid him he returned nearly $1000 back to me that he could have easily kept for himself. David was nothing like my attorney, he would always return my email within the day, and never made it seem like I was bothering him. At sentencing I received the low end of my guidelines, I am able to surrender after april 15th to finish my semester of college, and I received a judicial recommendation for the RDAP program. Since my attorney did nothing but file David's work on the defense sentenincg memorandum, I feel like it was his efforts that help me attain everything I was given. This is just my 2 cents, but the money that I paid David(1/10th of what I paid my attorney) was definitely worth every cent.
I'm so glad you feel good about the services he provided. That is so important. I know we had 2 lawyers that I still feel didn't do the job they should have. Good luck with your future. Take care and God bless.

I am currently using David's services and can vouch for everything Keynote has said. He has quite often advised my attorney on how to proceed. I hired David prior to entering my guilty plea and had him accompany me to my plea and the PSI- it was so invaluable. He made sure I was overly prepared- with the necessary paperwork. I just received my PSI and did not shed a single tear.(which is pretty amazing) He is working on my DSM and I know he is going to help me receive the best possible sentence and placement. Yes, he is expensive but I never could have gone through this ordeal without his expertise and support. I have asked him to come to my sentencing hearing because he is the kind of person that keeps my defense team on their toes. So if possible, I would recommend him. Also, he answers those early morning, late night and weekend questions!
We used novak's book Downtime and it was so valuable to our son about what to expect from beginning to end. We still use it as a reference guide. Our attorneys were so impressed with it, they also bought it because once their job is done they have no idea about what really goes on inside the prison. I wanted to recommed it to the woman whose introduced herself who had a son that thought he was going to have a tv in his cell but I wasnt sure about the rules about suggesting people buy stuff. Novak also has books about individual prisons that was very helpful as well.
