Default What's it like in A & D? Can he be released early?

My boyfriend is still currently in Union County Jail awaiting them to fax his papers to see if he will go for 3-9 months. Then they are going to move him to Rankin to figure out where he will be placed for A&D. Has anyone else's boyfriend, husband or son been sent to A&D? If he gets 6 or 9 months is it possible to get out in 3? Does anything bad happen to them in A&D like fights, or being stolen from? If he has great behavior can he get out a lot earlier? Are you allowed any visitations, or able to call/send letters. How is the A&D program and what would be the best place for him to get sent to? Thanks so much in advance, -stressed girlfriend

Hi csansing97, sorry to hear about your boyfriend but welcome to PrisonTalk. I'm not an expert about the "criminal justice system" here in MS but I'll let you know what I understand.

The judge determines the amount of time his sentence will be. If his trial has completed, then his stay in Union County jail will be only as long as it takes for an opening at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility, where EVERYONE who is found guilty of a felony is processed. When he goes to CMCF, he will not be allowed to communicate for a time (it can be from a week or so up to a month) while they evaluate his situation, do tests, and decide where he will spend the rest of his sentence. During that initial time, he can't talk on the phone or write. Eventually you will be able to communicate with him based on their rules.

As for the time he will be inside, it all depends on what the judge says, and what kind of crime he's found guilty of. Some allow early release, while others are "day for day"--in other words, he has to serve the entire time. It also depends on how well he acclimates to the prison life and keeps his record clean. If he gets into trouble, his chances of early release are greatly reduced.

And speaking of that, you asked about "fights or being stolen from". When at CMCF, at first he won't have anything to steal, because at first he can't purchase anything at the canteen. But it's prison, so there's always a chance of violence.

There are some good "stickys" in the Mississippi forums that can give you additional information and insights into the process and the issues both your boyfriend and you will face. I'd suggest starting with the "Central Mississippi Correctional Facility" forum, and read the first two "stickys": "... Receiving and Classification 101 for families" and "MDOC Classification Objectives". Also read the stickys in the forum "Mississippi DOC--What You Need To Know".

And if this isn't what you've asked about, I'm sorry.

Please also know there are folks here who know what you're going through and will give you whatever comfort and encouragement we can. Unfortunately, the MS forums are not the most active ones on PrisonTalkOnline (PTO) for whatever reason. But check in, read-read-read and post if you need a shoulder to cry on or an ear on which to vent.
