Unhappy Intro--wedtodarkness from Ohio

hi all, I'm amanda. as of today my boyfriend has been in the hamilton county justice center (jail) for 12 days. this is not his first time in jail, he has been at butler county jail for a series of 4, then later 7 days.

I miss him so much, I depend on him in many ways. I've been feeling very stressed, depressed and stir crazy since he's been away, because I'm afraid to leave home and miss one of his rare phone calls. they could come anytime between 9am to 9pm. the uncertainty of how long he might be in jail or prison is killing me. he had a court date on tuesday but it ended up being moved to friday. all yesterday I felt so hopeless, I cried a lot. I just want some answers. of course, I would love if they could release him on probation. but even if it turns out he will be in jail for 1-2 years or more, I would hate it, but at least I could eventually fall into a routine. right now there is no routine, it's just me waiting around and missing him.

sorry, that was a bit more than just an introduction. :(

Welcome to PTO.

My husband was arrested in May and spent 10 days until he was released on bond and house arrest. He was there more than 72 hours before he saw a judge at all to know for a fact what would happen. We are going through the federal system and just a few weeks ago he signed an open plea.

Everyone here will tell you that the worse part of the whole process is not knowing what the end result will be. We have been in that part for more than five months now and have probably that much more to go. So, what I can tell you is this.... while it totally sucks not knowing what will happen in the end take things one day at a time; tackle one issue at a time. Take a breath to enjoy what you can in between. And most of all, stay as busy as you can!

Welcome to Prison Talk Amanda. Court postponements are frustrating, but they happen frequently. I hope you both will have a better idea of what he is facing on Friday.

Best advice now is to breathe and get yourself together. There is nothing you can do right now accept wait.

When times got quiet, I would tell myself to enjoy it because the ride will pick up soon.

You'll see postponements, adjournments, etc. We had court once a month. The week of was always the worst. Tried to make the other 3 weeks as stressless as possible.

It is a trauma and a shock. If you depended on him heavily, prepping yourself to have to do things on your own for a while is not a bad thing. Someone has to hold down the fort so to speak.

I just want to rant. I'm reading my original post and feel jaded. he's been in there for 25 days now. the Friday I mentioned in my OP, he had court rescheduled for today. but when today finally came, he didn't actually have court at all. my googling has led me to believe today was just some kind of pre-trial motion. but it's weird because he had a video arraignment a while back, and he received paperwork saying that today he would have a mandatory court date. I wonder what happened there?

I'm starting to feel like the only way I can see him any time soon is if we can bail him out. it would be at least $1000, which I don't have. luckily his parents are also pulling for him, but they have a lot on their plate too.

I saw some stuff online about how speedy trial laws(?) could be violated, so I looked into it more and for a felony, they consider 9-month time frame to be "speedy"? ugh. I hate to think he could be in there for 9 months before even going to trial. this is too much

eta: based on a link I am reading, it also could have been a preliminary hearing involving burden of the proof. it sounds right considering it says you are not on trial for it.

yesterday, I learned that my bf's new court date is 12/12, 3 weeks from now. but today his dad was able to bail him out! his mom REALLY wanted to have thanksgiving dinner with him there.

I'm scared to think of what the future might hold for him, but Im happy he won't have to be in there just waiting for his next court date.
