I have never taken the shot or anything besides regular birth control pills...when I was 15-17. I haven't taken any since then. However...my friend used the ring...and her emotions were soo messed up. It messed with her hormones soo bad. My man's siter had the same problem with the shot...she just kept bleeding and bleeding! If I was you...I wouldn't be able to stand the bleeding...esp. with my man being home and all!!! I would stick to regular condoms...unless you are taking birth control to lessen your peroid and cramps...then I would ask your doctor for another method!! I hope you find the right type of birth control for your system!!! Best of Luck!! Hugs

i have never tried that shot. my friend has and she did not bleed. it was fine for her. she also smokes.

my gyno told me that the Depo shot would not be good for me. it could result in me not having kids?!!? WHOA. 19 years old. i am having kids at some point, so i said "no" to that.

BUT... i started the pill in January. i bled for 3 weeks out of the month. it went on for about 2-3 months and i said HELL NO. sooooo... she put me on a different one. that made me INSANE. i still bled and i had the WORST PSYCHO mood swings ever!! so, that was a NO.

my biggest gripe was - i was on the pill for cramps, hot flashes, and pain during ovulation. NOT FOR SEX, so here i am suffering....... it didn't do anything to help the symptoms i was on it for?!!?

so, i stopped in May... i did not want to be bleeding all summer long. i told her i would be back in September and i did not go back yet. i have always had regular periods and to be on that sh*t again and bleed all the time?!!? Joe doesn't come home 'til next year so i don't have anything to worry about 'til then.

she had suggested the patch... but i just don't like that whole idea...

any suggestions???

...and hun, for u, find something else. i am not sure what to tell ya 'cuz like i said, the pills did the same thing to me.......

i used the iud for about 20 yrs and had no problems with it other than heavy bleeding during my period sometimes. of course, i'm happier now that i don't have to deal with any of it anymore!

A couple people I know did the shots and went through so much misery. I looked it up on the net and came across a sight about women on it... wow! they all went through so many of those problems and more. They all thought they were losing their minds at times with emotions and whatnot

Thankfully I no longer have any of these concerns. I had a partial hysterectomy back in December. No more periods....YEAH!!! I feel so liberated!

Writing my previous post made me think about something else, while we are on the subject. Do you ladies enjoy having sex during "that time of the month"? I never did in the past...just way too messy for me. Some of my girlfriends loved it during that time. Just curious?

The shot stops your periods all together, there is some weight gain. You will have to be off the shot for about a year before you can get pregnant.

I was on depo for over a year. Stopped my period completely. No problems. But once I stopped it. I bled for 3 months straight.

Patty, here's the deal about Depo and this comes from an OB-GYN worker friend of mine (I'm in the medical field too but haven't work in anything OB-GYN related for years)... not only does it do different stuff to different folks, but it could even do different stuff for you. If you stopped it for 6 months and then went back on it again, you might not ever have a period or any side effects at all. It's one wacky drug IMO.

I was one of the lucky ones - I was on it for about nine or ten months and not only did I not have a period the entire time but it was another nine months later after my last shot before I ever had one (three months of covered time + six months after it was to have worn off). Didn't have any weight gain and other than it feeling like concrete going into my arm every time I got a shot I had no problems with it all. The biggest downside for me was that ever since I got mine back it's been so heavy I'm practically anemic every month at that time and the cramps have been horrific.

FWIW I think taking the pill in your 30s and 40s and smoking is a matter of every OB-GYN's opinion as well. When I started the Depo shot I was 35 and I said something to my gynecologist about knowing I wasn't supposed to be on the Pill at my age and smoking, and his opinion was that the risks of clots were the same if you were a smoker whether you were 15, 25, 35 or 45 and he had no qualms about putting me back on it if that's what I wanted, but then we got to talking about the Depo shot and I just decided I'd try that. I loved it and I'd go back on it when my man gets out, except my extremely Catholic guy has some issues about birth control so I guess I won't be. But I also figure it'd be my luck that I'd wind up like you are now on a second try after having had such great luck the first time...

In any case I hope you get this sorted out soon, I know that's got to be sooo annoying, it would be me!!!

Thanks for your input Lysbeth ~ annoying is a word I've used often these past few months, unfortunately since starting this thread it's gotten worse. I'm calling the doctor tomorrow, annoying is one thing, pain well I have a fairly high tolerance for it so for me to say I am in pain and yes I am saying that well I need to be a grown up and call the doctor tomorrow. I'll keep y'all posted.

Thanks again,
Patty

Patty,

I guess the tune is ringing over and over and over again on this one. I was on the pill for about 2 years and then decided to try the shot. (can you believe i had insurance but went to planned parenthood anyways, because it was/is so much cheaper than my regular DR?!) I stopped periods right away, (i was smoking at the time too) the dr didnt say tht i had to quit, but of course the dr always wants u to quit. well, like Lysbeth said, everytime u get the shot your arm feels like a bazillion lbs heavier and you can feel the injection sinking in literally. i was happy and carefree for about the first 6-9 months on the shot, then i started to "wierd out" attitude, emotional, u name it i had it. Some other friends of mine on it thought it was great and had no side effects. I didnt have a breakthrough bleed at all (occasional spotting around the time the next shot was due though) after about a 1.5 yrs on that, my body just felt like it needed to have a (cycle) so i went off of it. man, that flow came RIGHT away. but when i went back to BC pills, i was completely regular which was something that never happened before depo. Now, im running like clockwork but anyways, depo is really different for everyone... as you can see, its pretty much love it or hate it. I am considering going back, the only reason im not is because of the moodiness. Have you considered quitting smoking (i did because i wanted to loose weight and improve my cardiovascular health)... Or would the let you on the pill if u started to use the nicotine patches? just wondering... I would love to go on seasonale, but its too dang expensive right now with my insurance... I would say that if u hvent stopped bleeding, that its not worth the time or money.

My daughter took that shot and she gained alot of weight and bled constantly, she said that's how it's bc, you don't stop bleeding so you can't have sex!! She went off of it and is now on the pill.

Any way Patty, I hope something gets worked out for you and your man

Guess I'm lucky in this regards that I had a tubal done so don't have to worry about getting pregnant.. For anyone not wanting anymore kids I highly recommend it...

I had problems with the pill - gained weight, headaches, etc.. Never tried any of the other stuff...

Do they still have the things that they put in your arm?? I can't even remember what they were called.. alot of my friends used to have those adn it caused lots of issues with them.....

Good luck on whatever your decision is...

I know I already posted in this thread once, but I wanted to tell you about something else.

Depo does stop your period, although it can cause the other side effects. There is a new IUD out that is progestin-only-called Mirena. It's a good one, and it's supposed to reduce the problems with your period. I know before I went on the Pill, I would get the WORST PMS....eat for two weeks, and I was always very mean for no reason...I'm not that bad now.
Second option is the tubal ligation-where they tie off your tubes. You might still get a period, and they only do it if you've had children. My mom had it done, and she never got pregnant after that (she was 33). But it might work for you. I don't want children but my gyno wouldn't let me have the IUD or the tubal ligation...she said it was because I had never had children. Or because my progesterone is lower than normal..how would she know THAT?

Best of luck!

Okay NOT to sound like a broken record but depo DOES NOT always stop your period as this thread clearly shows!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Okay I'm done (for the moment),

I got my shot 2 days after i had my daughter and I bled 6 months straight, then i quit altogether. i also lactated the whole time i was on the shot too (14months). then after i quit getting them I stopped lactating and after about 4 months starting bleeding nonstop for a month. it sucked and i don't know if i would ever go back on it just cuz of the bleeding for so long.

Patty, did this get resolved...

i don't know much about this...but, my friend has a tempory tubes tied... i forget the proper name for the procedure...

you know, you know science could design a birth control for men...i mean philosophically-ethically this is very wrong...

i assume there are reasons he is not considering a vesectomy..

"academically,"=}
love you-

One thing that none of you mentioned was getting your tubes tied. Did you ask your doctor to do that? I took the pills for several years but after I turned 40, the doctor said I should stop taking them. He said that with smoking and taking them for such a long period of time, there could be serious problems. Thus, I decided I wanted my tubes tied. The doctor agreed that was the best choice and the insurance paid for the procedure!

If you're bleeding every day, you should see a different doctor! Something is very wrong and you could end up having to have surgery.
