Default Montecito wildfire forces evacuations

Multimillion-dollar homes burn in California as fire spreads in hills above Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) _ A wind-driven brush fire destroyed dozens of homes Thursday in the tony enclave of Montecito, forcing residents to evacuate what has long been a hideaway for the rich and famous.

Montecito fire spokeswoman Geri Ventura said she did not know exactly how many homes had burned, but television footage showed flames engulfing dozens of large multimillion-dollar houses. Ventura said about a quarter of the community of 10,000 people was evacuated and more could be moved if the fire spreads.

Default Fire destroys 80 houses in Montecito

Reporting from Montecito -- A fast-moving brush fire driven by 50- to 70-mph winds erupted Thursday night in the hills above Montecito in Santa Barbara County, burning 1,500 acres, destroying more than 80 homes and forcing evacuations of luxury neighborhoods, authorities said.

The blaze, dubbed the Tea fire, broke out about 6 p.m. in the wealthy Cold Springs area of Montecito, where a number of celebrities live, and quickly overwhelmed firefighters with its speed.

I hope they get this fire under control quickly and all the guys that are there get to go back to camp quickly so all you gals can visit as planned. They were showing the fire here on the news and it does not look good at all.

My husband just called to let me know that we couldn't visit this weekend, he was going down to Santa Barbara... now what happens? Is there a number we can call to make sure they are ok or do we just wait, watch the news and sit on pins and needles until they call? This is his first fire.

This sucks... I've been crying since we got off the phone.

Well ladies I am sorry you are going thru this. It is really hard when they are out at fires. There is no way of having any contact with them. The one thing you can do it write them every day. If they are gone for awhile sometimes their mail is brought to them, if not they love getting back to camp to find lots of mail waiting for them. You can call the camp and check to see if they are back or if maybe they know when they might be back but they will not give you any other info. It is just a wait and see thing now and it can get really hard not knowing what is happening. Just keep coming back here and venting and talking and we are all here to support each other thru this. It will all be alright the guys are trained to be out there and know what they are doing and they will all get back to camp alright when the fire is contained and the cleanup is all done.

This fire might also affect people traveling up from So. Cal. to visit at Lompoc. If the 101 closes I don't think there's another way to get there. I will be praying for your guys safety!

Anniko I am sorry to hear that W will be going all the way down there for the fire. I hope he stays safe as well as all the other guys. I feel guilty cause I do not have to worry about these things anymore. I just got off the phone with C for our morning call and I did not have to worry about not hearing from him for days and that felt good. HI will keep all the guys in my thoughts and prayers and hope they are all back in camp real soon.

Default California governor declares emergency in wildfire

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed a state of emergency in Santa Barbara County, where a wildfire has destroyed more than 100 homes.
The governor's declaration Friday dedicates state personnel and equipment to the firefighting effort in the celebrity enclave of Montecito and the town of Santa Barbara.

My husband called me last night right before he left for the fire. He was excited because he likes going out on fires but he was also sad because we won't get to see each other this weekend as planned.

msnbc.com staff and news service reports
updated 32 minutes ago

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Firefighters and a squadron of aircraft launched a desperate attack Friday to push back a wind-whipped wildfire that destroyed at least 100 homes and forced thousands to evacuate in the enclave of Montecito and outer parts of Santa Barbara.

County Fire Chief John Scherrie said the number of homes burned could be closer to 500. Local news helicopter crews have also remarked that 100 appears a conservative estimate.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday declared a state of emergency, freeing up state resources to battle the blaze in which at least 13 people have been injured. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

My guy called last night too, right before he went. He said probably no visits this weekend. I'm still hopeful though!

I heard they send out as many firefighters (from all over California)as they can. If you call that camp they will be able to tell you.
