Default Can't believe it will be 4 years in February

I have been a long time PTO member - From December 2006 when the shit hit the fan to now!

I will have been out of prison for four years in February. When I was sentenced to 120 years for Embezzlement with all of it suspended but 3 years. I did 2-1/2 with good behavior and walked out of prion on supervised probation.

I have to say it was tough - struggled a lot - adjusted a lot - lost a lot but I was determined and in February 2013 I was released from supervised probation!!!!!

This allows me to have my complete FREEDOM back! Sure I might be on "paper" but that is a lot better than what I was...

I take one day at a time and that is all I can do...

Sure I have restitution of $860k and I owe over $300k in taxes (yep the IRS loves to tax the embezzlement cases) but it is all good - IRS deemed me "non-collectable" and I pay my monthly restitution as ordered for the rest of my life....

Today I am happy and hopeful for what my future holds. I am actually glad I went to prison - I changed for the better and I am a much better human being b/c of prison!

I hope that my story that I have shared with so many will help just one person...

When you lose EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING it makes you stop and have a reality check!!!

If anyone needs to chat or is feeling the pressure of an upcoming court situation dealing with Embezzlement don't hesitate to PM me - I will help as much as I can!!!

Take Care!

Default Update

Well I have been out over 5 years now and I am still doing well. I have a great job and a great life. I will tell you that being a convicted felon has it's days. It's tough to even get an apartment. I can tell you that being honest and up front is the best policy.

I no longer want the "criminal thinking" to over shadow my success. I try to not think about my past but every now and then I do.

My crime devastated many people to include my victim's and my family. Do I wish I could turn back the hands of time and not have done it??? Sure but then I wouldn't be where I am today. I am strong and confident and I feel good about life.

Prison will never be a "walk in the park" but you make the best of it right?

I don't post here often and in fact haven't since last year but thought I would stop in!

Take Care!

Default Update, it's been over 7 years since I got out

Well, on February 19th, 2017, was my 7th year anniversary that I walked out of prison. February 19th is also my birthday so that day is extra special for me. It will be 10 years in May that I plead guilty for my crime and it will be 10 years in August that I went to prison. This site was my life line during December 2006 and August 2007. I was devastated when I had the unknown about prison. I got a wealth of information from this site and good people who kept up with me and made sure I would understand all what was going on. I did my time, 2.5 years due to good behavior and walked out of prison, never to return. I have time over my head still. My sentencing was 120 years, all but 3 years suspended. My first 20 years, with 3 suspended is still looming over me. I have about 10 more years to go on my good behavior but I got off probation back in February 2013 and I am thrilled.

Fast forward today, I am very happy and content. I have a good job now for almost 4 years and life is good. The key to success, is keeping your mind clear and telling yourself failure isn't an option. You have to continue to keep going and know that you made a mistake and that it's okay. Life is what you make it!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It gives me hope that my son can have a life once he's released next February. He has the attitude you mentioned (failure isn't an option) but I know he's worried that no one will look past his label. Being able to tell him that there are people who have gone through the fire & survived is giving him the courage to dream again.

Keep posting & good luck!

Thank you for your updates and hope that you give us. I am a parent of a 37 year old son who is on his 3rd prison term serving 12 years for thefts, assault to police officer, from resisting arrest. And the thefts were not for much money, doesn't make any sense to me. I have disengaged from him this time after 20+ years of being there for him with the exception of one eight month period nine years ago. He has never been charged with a drug charge, but he definitely has many addictions and has been in and out of jails and prisons since he was 16. But thank you for your update, proving that people can continue to do what is right and stay out.

Default **UPDATE** 8 years since I walked out and still going good!

I do come here from time to time but honestly I try to put this in my past but it just comes back to haunt me every now and then. I owned up for my actions many years ago. I plead guilty back in May 2007 and went to prison in August 2007. Lost everything, but I walked out on February 19, 2010 on my 39th birthday. For the past 8 years I have walked the straight and narrow.

Got off supervised probation within one year
Got off probation for good in 2013
Paid all fines and court costs
Still owe restitution for the rest of my life
Had my civil rights reinstated

IRS hit me with taxes for money I stole which as of last August were over $400k, and I got the IRS knocking on my door so to speak after 7.5 years of crickets. I hired a good tax attorney and currently waiting on the IRS to see if they accept my OIC (offer in compromise). If they do, I will be relieved of any debt to the IRS. Credit report took off all judgements from y credit report last month regarding this issue.

I have a good job and make good money.

Next step, to get my right to bear arms back. Even though I could careless about owning a gun, I want that right back. Since VA passed a law several years ago for white collar crime felons that they could in fact ask for this right back, I am going to pursue that next.

Baby steps over the past 8 years for sure. I was given 120 years with all but 3 years suspended. I have good time behavior over my head until 2027. It sucks some times but as the years go on and I know I fucked up and I owned it and I will continue to do my best to do right and live by the law and obey the law.

I left VA many years ago and it was the best thing for me. Today I have a good life that I am thankful for.

You make your own success. If you continue to think criminally, you will continue to be a criminal. Criminal thinking is a negative way of life. I agree in second chances, what I don't agree with is making the same mistakes over and over again and thinking you should get more chances. Grow up, own your actions and take charge of your life! Do you! Life isn't always fair, trust and believe I know!

God Bless!

Myfreedom, you're proof that prison doesn't ruin everyone. Much success to you in the future.

This forum was my save and grace when I was going through the WHAT IF's for sure! I can't imagine where I would have been without all the support from the people from this sight. Even when I went to prison, I was still thought of and people wrote me and encourage me. This is a great site with a wealth of support and information.

I did get my right to vote/jury duty back. Last step is my gun rights. I really want it back. May have to go back to VA to appear before the judge but we will see. I heard some of the cases the attorney can be present for you. Fingers crossed.

Still waiting on IRS to finalize the OIC. I hope we can come to an agreement so I can pay it off and move on with my life.

Thank you for the reply!
