Dear GivinSpirit,

I looked up Hastings. It looks as though you're south of G.R. I see highway 96. Do you have a loved one in Jackson???

Dear Catlady,

It's nice to meet you. It feels better to know that I'm not the only one who suffers from this problem. Out of curiosity, do you have any childhood memories of any events that may cause your fear??? I do, so I wondered if you did too.

For me, it was my foster parents, when they took me to Saginaw with them, as a child. They had a nephew who wanted to go bike riding, so I went with him. But he turned out to be a very naughty young man!

I was only about 8 or 9. He was around 13 or 14. He was trying to put moves on a little girl who just had no idea...I was always a tomboy and didn't like what he wanted. Being a tomboy, I fought back and ran away. Once I got away from him, I realized I was lost. I wandered the streets crying, until a police officer passed by.

I wish I knew that officer's name. I'd still like to thank him. The poor man. I didn't want him to touch me. I was so scared of getting in his police car. But he got me safely in the back seat. That man cruised up and down every single road....for hours....asking me, "Does this street look familiar?" But all the houses looked the same. Part of me didn't want to go back. That boy was there!

Finally, on the way back to "the station" we saw my foster dad walking the sidewalks....looking for me.
My foster dad beat my butt all the way back to the house. I was too afraid to tell him what his nephew had done.

Ever since that day, strange roads and heavy traffic (that might drag me some place I don't want to go) has been my biggest fear. It's been over 30 years, and it still won't let me go.

It won't take the fear away, but if you can find an event to pin your fear to, it at least makes sense. I didn't know until years later that this "fear" even existed. It took me even longer to figure it out. At least now, I can try to "work on it" little by little. I wish we lived closer, Catlady. Maybe we could "work" on it together. We could take turns driving and facing our fears.

For a long time, I couldn't even get on a highway. I couldn't even drive to downtown Muskegon or take any roads that I'd never driven on before. Not even roads in my own town. It is slowly getting better. But those "far away" places are just too much, and so are big cities.

I'm in Washington Twp. And my soon to be Husband is in Cooper Street in Jackson. It's about a hour and a half drive every weekend to see him, never have missed one weekend in the last 14 months.

Butterflygirl,

Oh you look like an answer to prayer, right off the bat! I have driven to Holland before, with my husband, for Christmas shopping. Thank God he makes me drive sometimes. But I have drove there, so I'm not afraid to go now.
Please, please contact me. I really want to see my son. I will pay all the gas, drive to Holland to meet you, and even buy you dinner if you like!
Only possible problem is that I smoke, but if you don't, maybe we could pull over at a rest stop. I won't smoke in your vehicle if you prefer me not to.
My son, Michael, did call me....finally....yesterday. What a relief! Evercom pulled some goofy stunt by putting a block on my phone! They tried to say they didn't know I paid my bill! "You have to call us", they said, "and let us know you paid it." Meanwhile, my son thought I had blocked him.

What will I need to visit my son? I know I'm on his list, but will I need any other paperwork? Please let me know! Thank you so much for posting Butterfly!
Rebecca

Hi!!!

My name is Angela and I live in Muskegon, MI. Up until last summer my Father was incarderated in Ypsilanti. He was moved back here to Muskegon (his hometown) in the summer of 2001. Sure makes visitation alot easier

Looking forward to getting to know some of you!!

Thank you for the welcome Deb!!

Not too long after I posted that, I called the prison to find out about Holiday visitation hours and was told that my Dad had been transferred!!

Now he is 3 and a half hours away in Adrian at a place called Gus Harrison Correctional Facility. Guess I won't be visiting him as often

Thanks again, I look forward to getting to know and make some new friends here!

Take care!!

~Angela

goddessgirl,

You may want to post in the Michigan forum about wanting to carpool as more people will probably notice it then... Good luck!

Deb

I love this Michigan forum. It has been wonderful for both me and my significant other who is doing his first and hopefully last time in prison. Appleteddy, I too live in Rochester Hills and he is at Riverside in Ionia. Carpooling sometime might be possible if you're interested.
