The program your mother is telling you about is just a discount off of regular phone service that is available from many phone companies, not special service. It's called the Lifeline Assistance Program. It gives you a discount of $12.75/mo off of your bill.

Here's where you can learn more about the program: LifeLine Assistance Program

I just ordered Vonage because I spoke with a woman who uses it at his camp for her husband. She lives in California but only pays 52 cents per call instead of the 2 dollars plus that I pay. See with Vonage you can request any number you want including area code so she told me to order the same area code as where my husband is located. It only cost me 17.10 to order the service and that pays for my 1st month. It is 9.99 for the 1st 3months and 25 dollars after that. So in my personal experience and opion Vonage is the way to go. Normally I was paying at least 100 a month just for my phone and around 50-75 a week to securus

I don't see how that is possible because Securus charges $1 just to connect a call through their system.

I just had to go read the contract to double-check. But the contract does say only $.50 and then no per minute charge for local area. I didn't realize that they charged a lower connection fee for the local numbers. YIKES.

When my hubby was at CFRC he was local and we only paid $0.54 a call, now that he's been moved to Suwannee, it's $2.02 per call. I am definitely looking to find a cheaper option for him to be able to call home. I hate rushing the kids through talking to him and trying to catch up. I will look into Vonage.

Have you tried google voice? That is what we use. I think its less than 50 cents for him to call me since I set my google voice number to his zipcode. Hope this helps!

I'm looking into saving money on calls. I thought that 2.08 wasn't too bad but its really starting to add up. How exactly does Google voice work? I set up an account on my cell but Idk how to get the local number. Also, how do you connect it with the securus account?please help.

I wouldn't dare get caught using Google Voice since it's not a landline. I don't want Hubby losing phone privileges.
