Default New York’s longest-serving female inmate died of cancer

New York’s longest-serving female inmate died of cancer – she only got treatment in the last month of her life

"New York’s longest-serving female inmate died on Tuesday at the age of 61. Her supporters say the cancer that killed her went undetected for a year — and that she deserved a shot at parole.

Valerie Gaiter was sentenced to 50 years to life for murdering an elderly couple in Flatbush, Brooklyn during a robbery in 1979. She was only 21 years old when she and a companion, desperate for drugs, stabbed the couple more than 70 times."

"Waiting is negative; hoping is positive. so try to wait with hope. This will help you remember that you're on your way to something worth waiting for."

Inmates that earn the privilege of parole do deserve a 2nd chance, but above that: All inmates deserve medical screenings to detect illness/disease as well as prompt and appropriate medical care for any illness / disease diagnosed.

My condolences to her family and friends.
