Metro Atlanta Local Briefs: Cops, courts and crime

Hit-and-run suspect held

A man who allegedly struck and killed a 12-year-old boy with his tow truck in Griffin and then left the scene of the accident turned himself in to police Sunday.

Timothy Roberts, 39, is charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident and other traffic violations for the hit-and-run Saturday evening at an intersection in Griffin, police said.

Laricky Andrews was riding his bicycle near a friend's house when he was struck and killed, authorities said. Witnesses said the driver of the red and white wrecker truck didn't try to slow down before or after the accident.

Roberts has spent time in prison for bigamy and cocaine possession, according to records at the state Department of Corrections.

Two most wanted taken into custody

Two of Atlanta's 10 most wanted fugitives were taken into custody Monday, including one who turned himself in saying he was tired of living on the run, police said.

Anthony Finley, 37, had been on the lam for a month since he was accused of shooting to death a man who intervened in a dispute, police said.

Finley turned himself in to police about 10:45 a.m., and was charged with murder in the death of Arthur Levell, 38, of Morrow.

Police said Finley fatally shot Levell in the chest in the 2400 block of Third Street on Dec. 12.

About 15 minutes before Finley was taken into custody, police arrested Victor Hill, 21, on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.

Hill is accused of shooting Ricky Taylor, 32, of Atlanta on the back porch of a house in the 500 block of McDaniel Street on Nov. 22 after the two argued. Taylor ran from the scene, collapsed on a nearby street and was pronounced dead a half-hour later, police said.

Woman indicted in sister's death

A Clayton County grand jury has indicted a Riverdale woman in the July 23 shooting death of her sister. Loretta Denise Noble, 42, is accused of killing Justene Hathorn, who was found shot to death outside of the Valley Hill Road apartment complex. According to the indictment, Noble shot Hathorn with a .32-caliber handgun.

Search continues for man in slaying

Acworth police continued searching Monday for a man wanted in the slaying of a 27-year-old woman found dead on Friday.

Lisa Ann Bourquardez's body was discovered by family members and police inside her home on Rockdale Drive, in a neighborhood near Lake Acworth. The cause of her death has not been released.

Police are looking for Jose Bautista, 35, an estranged boyfriend of the victim.

Bautista, who also is known as Jamie Barcelata, may be driving Bourquardez's missing blue mid-'90s Saturn SL2, which has Georgia license plate AAD 6432, said Acworth police Chief Michael Wilkie.

The victim's family called police after she failed to pick her children up from day care on Friday.

2-year-old dies in ATV accident

A 2-year-old passenger in an all-terrain vehicle was killed when a 9-year-old neighbor drove off a 5-foot retaining wall Sunday night, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office reported.

The 2-year-old was seated between his father and the 9-year-old girl who was driving when the Polaris Ranger 4X4 fell and overturned just before 6 p.m., investigators were told.

Laws do not place age restrictions on children driving ATVs on private property, said sheriff's Capt. Frank Huggins.

Nicholas Ryan Gardner died after an emergency flight to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. The father, Dewey Gardner, and the driver, who was not identified, were treated for minor injuries.

The accident happened in the girl's family's yard in the Breeze Bay subdivision off Flowery Branch Road near Lake Lanier.

No charges were filed. An investigation continues.

Driver killed when tow truck overturns

An East Point man was killed when his tow truck overturned after colliding with an interstate median and a car Monday morning, Gwinnett County police said. Xavion Wilson, 43, lost control of his tow truck on northbound I-85 just south of Indian Trail Road when a Honda Accord changed lanes in front of him, said police Cpl. Dan Huggins. The truck struck a median, then the Accord and overturned, he said.

The driver of the Honda and a passenger in the tow truck were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with minor injuries. Two other vehicles were sideswiped during the collision, but no other injuries were reported, Huggins said.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Honda, police said.
