Post Important: Phone Policy Change

After Hurricane Katrina, MDOC relaxed the policy regarding inmates being able to call cell phone numbers. Now that some time has passed and they have decided that hurricane victims should have a landline in place by now, they have reinstated the ban on calling cell phones. The inmates are only allowed to call land-lines.

I spoke to a staff member at SMCI this morning after my Hon told me last night that he was getting a recording that the number he was dialing was not permitted as he tried to call a displaced family member. This person does not have the means to get a landline so they are now out of contact. He is going to be so upset when I explain this to him. The family member is as well.

I know there are others who are using cells, so I thought that you should be prepared that MDOC is checking them and beginning to block the calls. You should get a back-up plan with a land-line lined up.
