The bop hasn't decided what they are going to do about the 500 mile requirement in the new law.

For as long as there have been federal prisons, the bop has sent folks anywhere in the country without much consideration of the problems the distance will cause the inmates and their families. The "unofficial program" said they would "try" to place prisoners close (LOL) to home, but that was always meant to deceive. Now with the new law, they have much less discretion to ignore its requirements, but they still have ways to minimize transfers. One of them is the new prison will have to have "available space", which certainly can be manipulated.

Depending how much longer he will be in bop custody, he may be able to apply for a "first step act" transfer closer to home later this year.

Hey there, my fiancť was just transferred to big sandy about two weeks ago and I was wondering if anyone can tell me any information about that place. I’ve heard it’s a lot of violence there so that means lots of lockdowns but as far as visits go, how much money can I bring for visits, things not to wear etc. thanks in advance❤️

The "all visits cancelled" banner is up on the Big Sandy web page. Here's the link to the BS Visitor's rules.
https://www.bop.gov/locations/instit...isit_hours.pdf

Most bop prisons discuss the amount of money visitors are allowed to bring for the vending machines, but not BS, so I'm not sure what that means.

"Only the following articles are authorized to be carried into the institution by visitors:
1. Photo identification
2. Essential medication (will be limited to the amount needed during the visiting period and controlled by the Visiting Room Officer)

Cellular phones, car keys, pagers, and handbags are not permitted in the institution and may not be stored in visitor lockers. Visitors are required to leave these items in their vehicles. Car keys may be stored in the visitor lockers."

Hey! Welcome! Yes many lockdowns. Iíve only been there once. I took about $25 in quarters- but they didnít count it so Iím not sure if there is a limit. As long as itís in a clear bag. As to what to wear- i just followed the dress code I found on the website. I did walk in with sweat pants and they told me to go change. I took like 5 back up outfits. The weekend I drove out there was pretty chill. I checked in about 8am and it was me and two other families at the time. The staff was pretty helpful tbh- but I was told that they were training so idk how it is now. The waiting room has lockers so you put your purse and stuff in. I was with our 5month old baby so I had a lot of stuff- so the lockers are a decent size. My SO said he asked when they might be get out of lockdown- the CO said after the super bowl. Idk how true this. You can direct message me if you have any more questions.

The "Visiting at the U.S. Penitentiary (USP) has been suspended until further notice." banner is still up on the Big Sandy bop web page.

Good day everyone. I got a letter dated the Jan 29th and my guy was told by one of the guards they will be locked in for at least three weeks. Obviously I have no idea if the guard is correct or not but I figured I would pass on what I was told. If correct that means at least another week :-(
