Default I have questions on Setting up phone service with Verizon Landline.

Hello all!

I recently called in to Verizon and set up service for a landline in order to receive collect calls from a correctional facility in Hawaii where my s/o is being held. I had a few questions because I'm still new to this process and a bit lost. Apologies in advance for the long message (just really worried and want to be sure I'm being thorough):

1) After setting up a Verizon landline service, will he be able to just call in to my landline number after it is approved? Will I just be charged for collect calls through my Verizon monthly bill? I assumed this would be the only steps needed, but after reading a bit more on the forums it seems I need to set up an account with GTL or Securus (still don't know which company his jail is contracted with). Is there legitimate way around this?

2) I realize these companies contract with the facilities, but I'm not quite understanding why I will need to go through them in particular. Do I need to pay GTL/Securus AND Verizon for my collect calls? Why can't Verizon just take the collect call and charge me directly? The Verizon rep I spoke with said their landlines automatically block collect calls and in order to have it unblocked/activated to receive them I need to call Securus's number.. What if Securus ISN'T the provider for the jail he is in? I'm not even sure why she gave me Securus's number only and not GTL.. if anyone can give some insight on this I would really appreciate it! (Does anyone happen to know which call provider OCCC or Halawa uses?)

3) Once this is all cleared up, I'm hoping to have all calls on my landline forwarded to my cellphone as my landline has that call forwarding feature. Is this "allowed" or possible, or will it result in a block from the facility? The number my s/o will add to get cleared is my landline number and when he dials out to it, I'm asking Verizon to have it sent to my cellphone when I'm not around to pick it up. Has anyone done this before and can they shed any light on this?

It just seems like so many unnecessary costs costs and services for calls. Securus/GTL for collect call charges, Verizon landlines just to have the phone number be approved.

Has anyone been able to just have Verizon bill them directly for the collect call charges and not have to pay or go through Securus/GTL at all?

Thank you all! Sorry for the extremely long message. I'm just very confused and stressed about this whole process and am so glad to have this forum to turn to!

Welcome PTO! Since your question is state specific, I've moved your thread so the people most familiar with the Hawaii system can help. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi sorry for the late response. Just signed up for PTO. But i know that OCCC and Halawa use Sprint PCS as their phone carrier. I have had no luck with setting up a prepaid account with Sprint though. GTL only covers the federal prison on oahu (i think) I did find another service that i've been using for the passed 5 years. you can find it at justtalk.biz online or the phone number to set up is 808-838-1001 to set up. The provide you a local number in which your loved one can call collect and you can forward the calls to your landline or cell phone. Its a prepaid account. Ive had no problems with it yet. Rates differ depending on where you currently reside but on the website you can calculate the approximate per minute rate. Really hope this helps. If you live on the island tho, hawaii telcom is the landline that you'd have the most luck with. its actually cheaper for your loved one to call your local landline (hawaii telcom) number rather than setting up a prepaid account with a third party company. But if you're like me, i live on the mainland so just talk has been very faithful to me for the passed 5 years. Good luck and Have a great day!!
