Default Alabama riots reveal maximum security prison was a bomb waiting to explode

Alabama riots reveal maximum security prison was a bomb waiting to explode

"Alabama residents were shocked – but years of overcrowding, staff shortages and the addition of new technology were the warning signs officials ignored"

Quote:
The drone touched down in the prison yard at night, like a four-rotor, remote-controlled omen. When they found it, the guards knew it foretold chaos.

Prisoners in Alabama had outpaced their jailers, using new technology to smuggle in phones, weapons, drugs and money. Meanwhile the state’s antiquated, overcrowded prisons grew increasingly unmanageable.

All the worst factors converged, according to Bob Horton, spokesman for the state department of corrections: “Overcrowding. Staff shortages. A lack of modern technology. A propensity for violence,” he said. Something was bound to erupt.

Strange how these articles work. They mention lack of funding and being under staffed as causes. They never seem to mention the inhumane treatment of the human beings they call inmates.

LifeTraveler I totally agree. I get so mad when I hear the public talk about the perks inmates have while being in prison. The media has highlighted & sensationalized the prison system as a whole for years and the public has bought into a total LIE when it comes to the lifestyle and care inmates receive. So far I have yet to see any prison that resembles a "Country Club" with that Gold Premium Healthcare!

Inmates are treated like they are less than human crammed in tight living quarters with lots of down time. In many prisons the health and dental care inmates receive is minimal at best.
Many of us on PTO have read the horrific accounts posted here by family members that have had a loved one in prison with a health crisis. It is beyond maddening to sit back and watch what an inmate and family of an inmate have to endure.

Sadly we are the one's with loved ones inside the system and we know the truth!

Maybe if the system is lacking funds and staffing they ought to rethink some of their punitive long sentencing laws and that includes the mandatory minimums.
I guess you can tell I'm in a mood! SMILE

Ooh, Ms. G's comments make my blood boil! So she's a teacher and her grandfather was a warden. That makes her an expert? Building these new state of the art facilities would be a huge step forward.

I remember seeing the Holman prison on Lockup. I often discussed the show with my love and he would say you wouldn't believe half of the stuff we see back here and how we're treated. I've seen the images and it's shameful. I've learned not to read the comment section anymore. I recall a woman waiting in line at visitation. She recalled all the nasty things she felt and said about inmates and prisons until her family member was incarcerated.

This nation prides itself on being so "Christian" and so forth but I don't believe that at all.
