Default How can I get my fiance's social, birth certificate and identification?

We are trying to figure out how to get his documents while he's there. I don't know how to get any of the stuff I need for a marriage license.

He can apply for the social security card by mail after he has his birth certificate. Click here to read about the process.

Typically a birth certificate can only be obtained by the person or an immediate family member and that is done through the county of his birth. If there isn't anyone who can do that, you can usually get the application from the county, have him fill it out and a notary must sign it. Birth certificates can be a real pain when an immediate family member isn't able to do it in person.

As for an ID, to the best of my knowledge no state ID is available outside of their prison ID while incarcerated.

I'm not familiar with SC, but in Cali the prison would certify his identity (ID) for the county to approve the marriage license.

Start with the birth certificate, it will make every thing else much easier. Best of luck!

You can get a replacement birth certificate through https://www.vitalchek.com/vital-reco...2684802&ppc=0#

If he had a driver's license you can check this page about how to get a new one. You will need the driver's license in order to get the social security card. It can be a bit tricky to figure out the order in needs to be done in for each state. http://www.scdmvonline.com/dmvnew/de...cense_renewals

If he's never had a driver's license, and only an ID card, I'm not sure it can be done without him present...but you can call your local DMV and ask.

And then you'll need to go through the Social Security Administration for the SS Card. https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/

Unfortunately only the person listed on the certificate or their parent can apply through VitalChek. I don't know the process for verification of that, but just giving a heads up.

Who Can Order?
You are entitled to obtain a certified copy of a South Carolina birth certificate if you are the person named on the certificate (must be 18 years of age), the parent(s) named on the birth certificate.

Yes this is true. He can do it through office of vital records by mail.

I already had my hubby's old drivers license and social security card so it was easy to get the birth certificate and I replaced his drivers license.

That's good to know. Reading this made me think identity theft would be pretty easy if someone not related to the inmate can get all those documents.

The DMV will not issue another ID until he's release from state prison because it will have a special identification number due to his conviction.

To obtain his birth certificate, you have to go to SCDHEC. It can be complicated because in some instance only the person or their parents can obtain copies.
