I can honestly say I haven't seen anything as great as this to pick someone up. She's a lucky lady. Congrats!

Is that a newer Diamond? Looks very similar to the DA20 in shape, although it is a different canopy...but then again, the Diamond is coming up on 15 years of age.

Good luck and hopefully no ill-timed cross-winds on approach

SportCruiser (a/k/a Piper Sport). I trained in C172s/Cherokees/Warriors/Archers, but those are expensive to rent locally and suck fuel. There's a new shop at KSMO that rents the SportCruisers somewhat less expensively, cruising speed is about the same, and they sip gas. Also, the g/f is a little more comfortable in something that looks like it was built this century. (11X has a glass cockpit, and even the six-pack models have Garmin 495s, modern radios, iPod interfaces, etc. )

~6 weeks... Still don't know if I'm flying her back to KSMO or up to KIGM though... :/ Was out practicing VOR navigation today (it's been a while), and will have both possibilities planned out, just in case!

Heh. I sent her a copy of the above photo. She likes that it's "better - newer" than what I usually fly (mostly PA28-140 Cherokees, with some -161 (Warrior) and -181 (Archer) time) (see below).

What she doesn't realize, I don't think, is that those "old" planes are built like tanks; they've survived 50+ years of student operation, 1,000 hours/year on average. The LightSports are ... Well, lighter. Like flying a soda can.

I know well what you mean about the light-weight feel...I remember coming in over 183 to land at Bergstrom in the heat of summer and you could feel the updrafts from the heat. I'd rather crab a landing in windy conditions than deal with some of those...

Had the same issues when I was doing touch-n-go's at Lockhart and was coming in over crops that had been harvested. Not sure which is worse...farmland reflecting the heat upwards or six lanes of concrete highway doing the same on short final...

Thermals are a way of life, at KCNO especially. Low wing, ground effect, long runway, I just float through 'em.
