Default More executions this year than last

The upswing does not suggest that executions are likely to become more common, but it does grow out of recent courtroom battles. Chief among them is a big victory that the Supreme Court gave to state officials back in 2015. Officials had been looking for new drugs to use in lethal injections, and fighting to keep the sources secret from defense lawyers, as pharmaceutical companies kept pushing to keep their products out of death chambers. The court’s decision in the case of Glossip v. Gross set a high bar for arguments that new drug combinations would violate the Constitution’s ban on “cruel and unusual punishment.”

We are heading into the midterm elections - there are going to be more executions to prove "tough on crime" stances and to use the fear of those criminals and like criminals to get votes.

Thomas Bartholomew Whitaker is scheduled for next year, if you're not familiar with him, head to minutesbeforesix.blogspot.com he basically took, with help from the outside, uncensored from Texas death row and made it a bit more inclusive, giving voice to quite a number of death row and similar prisoners around the country. You can read uncensored still, if you dig, as uncensored was passed to Richard Cartwright after the execution of the former main contributor to that site.

Anyway, Whitaker has a date. The really bad thing about it is that Whitaker,s father doesn't want to see his son executed and has reconciled with him. Now, this wouldn't mean much in most cases, but Whitaker is in death row for killing his mother and brother, and trying to kill his father, so as an intended victim and as a survivor of the attack, his voice matters. His pinion matters. And now his only son has a date in Texas.

And this is just one of the people facing an imminent death as a result of the election cycle. Expect more executions. Expect more of the people who contribute to minutes before six to face a warrant, a date, and the race to save their lives. Expect the families of those who agree with execution to be trotted out by the government as the reason why this needs to go forward. Expect the father of Whitaker and other victims and relatives of victims who don't want the inmate executed to be ignored.

It's going to get hairy.
