Hi,

I am the fiance of a gentleman who will be sentenced on 3/10/16. We are not sure where he will be serving his time just yet. He is serving a 3 year sentence with a mandatory minimum of 1 year before eligibility of parole.

I'll be looking for any helpful tips on visiting and parole when the time comes. Anything about the graves act or graves act sentences would be awesome.

Come to think of it, I don't know anything about prison and neither does he. So like any information would be great from people with experience.

Once he leaves, I'll probably be looking for some people to share with that understand whats going on.

Best of luck to everyone

Welcome!

The best advice I an give you is to enjoy the time you have together. Get all his affairs in order and don't forget to take care of yourself.

When he is sentenced, he will be led straight away into custody. Say your goodbyes before you go into the courtroom (if you are attending the sentencing). This of course, is if he is currently out on bail. I know in movies you see people hugging their loved ones, but I certainly didnt get that.

It's going to be VERY tough for the first couple of weeks, months even. He will stay in county jail until they decide to take him over to CRAF in trenton. My husband was in county for just over a week but who knows if that's average or not. He was in CRAF for almost a month, and I've heard that's a longer time to be there.

Not going to lie, the WORST part of it was CRAF. There's no visits, they're in their cells 22 hours a day and the phone calls ae 15 minutes whenever the COs let them out of their cells. He will be classified based on a points system they use (age, priors, current offense, education level) that will decide his security status. He will not know what prison he will be at until his classification is over. My husband was able to write be pretty quickly and his phone list was approved VERY quickly and he was able to let me know where he was going when he found out.

Then you just wait for him to get moved. He will go to his "home" prison and things will fall more into a routine. Every prison seems to have a different set of rules for visiting, so I suggest when you find out that you look at that prison's forum here. I found a lot of information that way. It's overwhelming the first time. You'll cry and feel helpless, but at least you will get to see him.

The other good thing is that he will most likely have access to emails when he gets to his home prison. That has been a godsend. We've been able to communicate, and I've been able to send pictures quickly.

If you haven't already, find out what phone service your county jail uses and set up an account with them around the time of sentencing with some money on it. The state prisons use GTL. My county allows calls to cell phones, but the state does NOT. it won't get approved/he won't be able to call unless it is a land line.

The state prisons also use JPAY for placing money into an inmate's account. I'm not sure what the county uses... but mine I THINK also used JPAY? Honestly, it was a while ago and I don't know what we did to put money on his books when he was there. He only ordered toiletries when he was there.

Good luck. It's all a long, hard process. BUT just remember, you have a light at the end of your tunnel, and every day isn't one more day apart... it's one-day closer.

Thank you so much for your reply! It shed so much light. He was in county for a couple days before he was let out on bail so I have a gtl account.

I'm nervous for when I can't talk to him and of course my first visit.

I'm going to pm you!
