Default Welfare check on Inmate

Hello, the last time I talked to my son was 7-6-12. He got sent to the hole 7-7-12 under investigation for cigarettes. I got a Jpay from him 7-9-12 telling me he was in the hole. I called twice last week asking how long he would be in there and the first time the guy said he is in general population as of 7-9-12. I called a second time thinking that guy was wrong and the the second guy tells me the same thing he is in general population. I talked to the mother of somebody in his dorm yesterday and she said he is in the hole. He is at SCI lancaster, how do they mess that up? Most of all I am still concerned because hasn't wrote me and I sent him paper and envelopes, this isn't typical for him at all. I have ran a thousand scenerios through my head but puzzled. Would anybody else be worried or should I just relax, I don't want to ignore a red flag. I don't know if there is such a thing as a welfare check, for somebody to tell me yes he is alert and well. I know it is really hot in the hole there. Any advice will be much appreciated. God bless!!

I can only imagine how panicked you are. The only thing that crosses my mind is that yes, he may be in general population, but perhaps not in the same dorm, which is why the other mother's loved one might not have seen him. Inmates do not always get returned to the same place they were pulled out of to go to the hole. Many times they are relocated to other dorms.

Kind of sad that smoking puts you in the hole. It's a legalized substance - not like anyone is smoking crack. I personally don't believe that smoking is healthy, but if they designate areas for smoking and it does not affect the air quality of the non-smokers, I believe it should be allowed - and I had thought it was supposed to be approved, but apparently that hasn't happened. One less item of contraband for them to worry about... and another item to make a lot of money off of in commissary.

My heart goes out to you Tweety, our son's mean the world to us. I believe you have every right to find out just exactly where your son is. Do you know his case worker's name ? Personally I would create a paper trail ,, e-mail the warden Sheri.Duffey@odrc.state.oh.us explain to her the situation and that you would appreciate feedback on your son. I would make sure that you cc Gary Mohr. I bet both are parents and would understand your concern. Let me know how this turns out.

Thanks Katy for the email address and recommendation. I called the lieutenant this morning that I spoke with last week and told me about the whole situation with him. He did confirm that he is in segregation and told me how long he would be there, it was a relief to just know for sure. However he went on to explain the reason people were telling me that he is not in segregation. He said they have so many people in segregation right now that there is 2-3 guys in a cell!! My son had mentioned they had like 3 riots there a few weeks ago so I am sure that has something to do with it. My concern is, I am sure they are very small and probably only have 1 bed, is that even legal? Basically the computer won't allow that many people in segregation so it just shows him as general population. I don't know it don't sound real kosher to me. I can't remember where I read the annual report at for SCI that came out in March, if I remember correctly the segregation area had poor ventilation and other areas that needed attention which is concerning on these hot days.

I would take it a step further Tweety, e-mail the Warden, it is VERY important to create a paper trail. If you do not get the response you are comfortable with then I would e-mail gary.croft@odrc.state.oh.us he is the Office of the Chief Inspector. Remember....paper trail. Introduce yourself as a concerned mother, AND an Ohio tax payer ( you help pay this dude's salary ) Some people will tell you to call Central Office.....why waste your time, contact the "suits". Play the dumb blonde Mother.......trust me, it helps. I had an issue several months ago with the facility my son is residing, I contacted the Director of Communication and cc's Gary Mohr , I had results within 12 hours. I create that paper trail, in it I included " I trust that there will not be retaliation towards my son. Oh, he could not have been any kinder.
