My thoughts and prayers remain with Shawn, his family and friends/ supporters. This is a big step in the right direction but now's not the time to stop praying and writing to Gov. Kasich.

Default Shawn Hawkins Clemency List Grows

The ACLU today [May 18, 2011] joined the growing list of supporters asking Ohio Gov. John Kasich to grant inmate Shawn Hawkins clemency.

Hawkins is scheduled to be executed June 14. Hawkins was convicted of fatally shooting two teenagers in Cincinnati in June 1989.

The state's parole board has already recommend clemency to the governor and two ardent death penalty advocates -- state Sen. Bill Seitz and former secretary of state Kenneth Blackwell -- have made the same request.

It's looking hopeful!
"Ohio Gov. John Kasich has hinted that he might consider clemency for a condemned killer of two scheduled to die in June.
The governor says there is considerable doubt in the case of forty-three-year-old Shawn Hawkins, sentenced to death for killing two men in Cincinnati in 1989."
The story is here. If there is considerable doubt, shouldn't he get a new trial????

Default Does the governor have to answer to a clemency request?

Not sure if people have been reading up on the case of Shawn Hawkins. My question is; his parole board hearing was back in the beginning of May. It's now June, with his date only a week away. Does the governor HAVE to give an answer to the clemency? I mean, he "expressed doubt"--- but would that really matter? Its protocol to move d.row inmates to solitary confinement 30 days prior to their date... Is it protocol to go through with the execution if the Governor hasn't really okay-ed it? Do they HAVE to okay it in order for the execution to continue, or can the Governor basically turn a blind eye until June 15th, after the fact?

He's been commuted!!
Gov. John Kasich has decided convicted killer Shawn Hawkins should not be executed because there is doubt about his guilt. He commuted Hawkins' death sentence to life without the possibility of parole.
Hawkins' attorney Anthony G. Covatta issued a statement thanking Kasich for his "merciful decision." Read more.

Now we have to help work towards freedom!!
Sending love to Shawn and his loved ones!!

Default message Shawn

To all my supporters,

Thanks to you and all your love, concern and support, we have managed to achieve an incredibly victory. We have slowly and steadily climbed that proverbial mountain to conquer and claim what was rightfully deserved. To be sure, such a monumental task hasn't been easy; it has been a life changing experience. I will never be the same because of it. And more than the indubitable experience of spending over 20 years fighting for my life, what I will most take away from this whole ordeal, is the wealth of love & support from every one of you out there who made the time & put forth the effort on my behalf to help make a difference. I want you to know you are all appreciated in the most genuine way that I can express it, and thank God/Allah/the Creator for each and everyone of you who became part of the team for what was right. Even to those who wished the worst upon me, I express heartfelt thanks; for no other reason than I have love for you too. There are no hard feelings, as I wish you well. This is especially so, though, for all those who have stood by me through these challenging times to help the victory claimed. As I have expressed to my family, every single signature and person who has taken interest and action in this cause, has been considered equally valued and you all should be proud of yourselves for making such a difference. I encourage you all to continue doing so (in all the big & small ways) at every turn and let nothing persuade you otherwise. I am convinced that the ugliness in life can only be tempered by the beauty of those who care enough to be positive difference makers. For what it's worth, I have learned and grown a great deal through all of this and unbeknownst to you you all have been contributers to this personal development. I pay it forward by being a blessing to others through example.
Again, heartfelt thanks to you all. I send out a collective embrace and best wishes to you each and everyone of you. Be sure to follow me on Twitter out there!
Just kidding (laugh). Be good my friends. We did it!

Shawn

P.S. We keep working hard until I'll be able to come home. We still need your help!

Just found an article that Shawn was granted clemency by Gov Kaisch on June 8,2011. He is now off death row and serving LWOP!
