this might be a stupid question but i have to get a straight clear answer, so any clarity is appreciated. What does it mean when their sentence says for example 34 years to life? what does "to life mean?"

Mine has 15 to life. In Cali, and for him, it means he has to complete 15 yrs. Only then he can try for parole. He may not get paroled and would then continue trying until he dies or they parole him. So for him it could mean life in prison.

Some people can get reduced time and get a chance at parole earlier. He's not able to do that. Hope that clarified some.

My boyfriend has a 25 to life sentence. Hoping the three strikes reform pass in 2012. Then it will be a year and six months.

sentenced to 20 years (3 different felonies to be served consecutively) he hs no manditory minimum, so his counselor and us are hoping for about 2 years until being paroled

He's been in 6 already and still has 9 years to go, and is Virginia, so there is NO chance of parole or getting out early.

He's been in 6 years (we've been together almost 2 years)...4 more to go til we have a chance at parole (his original sentence is 20 years). I told him once I've waited 32 years to find you, whats a few more?
