Default Children Of Alcoholics Often Feel:

Children of alcoholics often feel:

1. GUILTY AND RESPONSIBLE for their parents' alcoholism

2. UNLOVED AND BASICALLY INVISIBLE, since the attention of the intire household seems to revolve around the alcoholic.

3. INSECURE, ANXIOUS AND FEARFUL because of the unpredictable and inconsistent behavior on the part of the drinking parent.

4. ANXIETY THAT THE DRINKING PARENT may become ill and die.

5. ASHAMED AND ISOLATED, incapable of seeking oe accepting help from peers and adult outsiders because of the stigma od alcoholism.

Young children of alcohol abusers may:

1. HAVE A FEW FRIENDS, for fear of letting them in on the family "secret".

2. BE TRAUNT or deliquent.

3. BE PRONE TO LEARNING DISORDERS, attempted and successful suicides, eating disorders - bulemia and anorexia nervosa, for example - an unhealthy overachievement, academically and in and around the home.

4. CONVERSELY, do poorly in school.

5. USE DRUGS or alcohol themselves.

As many as one in four of the 60 million school-age children in this country may live in alcoholic homes. Between 6 1/2 million and 7 million of these childrens of alcoholics are under 18.

Among other facts from the experts in the field:

1. SONS OF ALCOHOLIC FATHERS are four times more likely to become alcoholic.

2. DAUGHTERS OF ALCOHOLIC MOTHERS are three times more likely to become alcoholics.

3. DAUGHTERS OF ALCOHOLICS are more likely to marry alcoholics. As many as 35% of the children of alcoholics marry someone who either is or will become alcoholic.

4. ABNORMALLY HIGH NUMBERS of children of alcoholics go through juvenile justice system and mental-health facilities.

5. CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS often also are grandchildren of alcoholics.

6. ALCOHOL IS A FACTOR in as much as 90% of child abuse.

7. THE INCIDENCE OF MOTHERS becoming violent is three times greater than in alcoholic homes than in non-alcoholic homes.

8. THE INCIDENCE OF FATHERS becoming violent is eight times greater in alcoholic families than in non-alcoholic homes.

9. INCEST IS TWICE as likely to be evident in alcoholic families.
