Does that mean they won't have to do 85% of their sentence? My boyfriend was unfairly sentenced today. They had him wave his preliminary by dropping one of his charges and saying they were treating this as his first offense to waive the mandatory minimum of 3 years. However at sentencing the judge sentenced him to 4 years and 6 months based on the quantity in the charge they dropped. I'm so upset because we paid alot for our attorney to get the same outcome as he was getting with a public defender. He has already been gone a year and his kids are suffering.

The only way to find out what, if any prison reform legislation will become Virginia State law in the next few years is to track the pending legislation introduced by the Legislature.
https://lis.virginia.gov/

Until a bill is passed by both legislative chambers, the Virginia House & Senate, and is signed by the Governor it is not a law, and the content of the legislation is only so much hot air.

Oregon has mandatory minimums. Blue state. Texas had a story where a drunk affluenza defense of a teen that killed 4 people got probation. Red state. President Trump gave federal prison reform. Republican. Good luck!

It's the color of the money, not the color of the politics.
