Default On the news

So to make matters worse, now the media is running stories on all the local stations as well as the paper. Every detail is out of context, exaggerated and in some areas blatantly false. Its like a whole new level of hurt. How can I protect my family and try to continue to build a life with more problems thrown on top?

Ugh. Sensationalist news media reporting is the worst, especially when it comes to the way they cover certain crimes. Whatever you do, DO NOT read the comments under the online news articles. They always bring out the worst in humanity, especially when it comes to reporting on crime.

Best to just take a break from it all -- turn off the TV, ignore the newspapers, avoid Facebook and any online news sites. It sucks. You'll probably be on the receiving end of gossip for awhile, at least until the current news cycle is over. But in a few years time, once this has all blown over, most everyone will have moved on and found other things to rage about. And the current fixation on your LO will be a distant memory.

I went through a similar situation last month. Nickel Timer gave the best advice.

Avoid the news in the best way that you can and most definitely, avoid the comments. Don’t get too upset that the media mis - reports on elements of the case or your loved one. Yes, it is frustrating but there is nothing you can do, especially when you know more than the outside looking in.

There will be gossip for the immediate time frame and you mentally have to prepare yourself for it. You know your loved one best and focus on that knowledge.

In my case, I faced personal attacks, besides reporting on my husband’s „ fall from grace. “ I trained myself to avoid these discussions online and have snappy answers to people encountered in public.

Separate this „ outside noise ” from your process of building a life. Easier said than done but this reporting offers nothing positive for the main goal.

After a time, people will forget and you’ll be along in your long term plan.

Agreed. DO not read the newspapers, the comments and avoid social media for a while.
If asked you can always say.......dont believe everything you read.
The media frenzy on your loved one, will soon enough be replaced by something new.

I at least did not have any reporters show up around my home. THANK GOD.
Hopefully you will as well.
oh and be prepared to see them for any court appearance, again.......none of them bothered me at all.

Thank you all for your support. Only one reporter and a camera crew have been to my home, they showed my house and my car. No blurring out of numbers or license plate. What has been the hardest parts so far is the shear number of people who now know and who call, I've turned his phone off. At some point I will turn it back on. I hate to think of what the messages will be. It is my hope that all of this will fade away and I can rebuild a life with my family and not leave my home. At this point, I just don't know if that will be possible.
