SC program helps incarcerated fathers connection with children through books

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH)-- "Kirkland Correctional Institution held its first "A Father's Voice" program Tuesday.

As an extension to the "A Mother's Voice" programs at Camille Graham and Leath Correctional Institutions, the program was the first to be held at any male facilities.

The program allows for incarcerated parents, who meet certain criteria such as good behavior while in prison, to record themselves reading a children's book that will be sent to their children so that they can listen to their parents' voice reading to them."

I just love programs like this While the main goal is to establish / reinforce parent - child relationships, literacy programs enhance child development in other ways as well. We really, really need more programs like this.

Absolutely Patch! This is another channel of hope for the fathers who don't want to have incarceration tear at the bond they have with their child(ren).

While Iím thrilled that this is happening in SC itís like offering a band-aide for a severed artery

SC inmates have it tough; minimal (if any) health care, rare a/c, poor, poor food, primitive, antiquated housing.

People in any federal facility have it posh compared to even the least bad SC facility.

Ah yes, but you see, sometimes you have to look at the positive - no matter how small - appreciate it, and work towards more / larger positive things. Positive reinforcement, not negative reinforcement.

I gather that, but with all the hell going on within SCDC (over the last 2 years for sure) and these men being blamed for much more than they're at fault for, I'm for ANY outside intervention that allows them to feel human, again.

I HAVE to seek the positive. When others reach out to you for help when the walls close in and the people who are in place to do something about it go away when the soundbites and breaking news ends, this is where we find the light.
