Default Westville prison should have been condemned years ago!

Copied from a poster from 2017

Being built in 1949, it is a very old building, with little to no standard maintenance or improvements. Housing approx 3200 inmates.
In the pod referenced below, there are 80 inmates. Within 20 cells, that hold 4 inmates each, including cockroaches.
Many gangs in /or ruling the facility, also drugs and contraband.
Suboxone is brought in by the guards and/or vendors, they remove them from original packaging, placing plastic between each strip. You can then get 100 strips in a very small package. One strip is sold for $150.00.
The inmates cut the strip into 1/16 and melt it in a little water, which is then snorted, to get high. Spice K2 (synthetic weed) is very popular, do not know pricing for that. Tabacco is also popular.
Two of the EC pods, (Educational Community) were placed on lockdown. One was due to guards smelling smoke, the other was due to finding a candle. One use for candles is to heat/melt ink for jail tattoos.
It seems the corrective action for the contraband issue at Westville, has been to place more stringent efforts on visitors. When it comes to searching family/friends for the 'contact' visits.
They also perform random drug tests on inmates. If found dirty they can get kicked out of their programs, losing their 'good time' cuts. Do not know if they can receive more charges, but have heard rumblings to that nature.
A visitor, must first be approved by the facility. Then at visit, follow dress code, put everything from pockets into provided lockers. Shoes and change, for food vending machines are ran thru the xray conveyor. Visitor then walks thru metal detector, receives a physical pat down, including bras, waistbands, sock cuffs. Mouth/under tongue, hair, bottom of feet are checked.
The inmate is stripped searched before entering visitation room, changed into a different colored jumper, which zips up in the back, and puts on provided socks, sandels. After the visit they are strip searched again, change back into issued clothing, before returning to their pod.
The hug/kiss that is allowed at beginning and end of each visit is done at the desk, in front of the officer. Opening mouth/lifting tongue before and after hug/kiss.
Obvious the contact visits are not the major problem. Not sure why K9 dogs and more stringent searches are not required for the guards/vendors. If they are being done, the issue is being ignored and a much bigger problem exists.
Food service is provided by Aramark Food Services. Aledgedly they are low wages, and have minimal background checks.
Lunches served on Monday-Friday are a sack lunch, (believe those are frozen). The sack lunch was previously eliminated due to a petition or suit, years back. Apparently has been reinstated. This consists of 4 pieces of bread, to make 2 sandwiches. One is some type of 'meat', and one is PB&J. Do not know if a drink is provided.
The ceiling in the 'chow hall'/cafeteria is caving in/falling down.
The 4 person cells have no toilets. Therefore, the cells do NOT have doors.
Windows in some cells are broke, some type of plexiglass, flopping around which creates cold rooms in winter. There is no air conditioning system. Do not yet know if any extra ventilation is provided during extreme heat waves.
Only 2 or 3 out of the 10 showers work, with them having standing dirt/mud on floor. Only the hot water works on those. The mud/dirt may be due to the old tile flooring peeling up, possibly asbestos.
All 80 inmates share (1) one, built in the wall, kiosh. These are used to communicate thru Jpay.
Inmates use Jpay to send/read, letters/emails, listen to music, etc. Family/friends use Jpay for video visits, deposit money for commissary and send email/letters. They have (3) three telephones which all 80 inmates share.
Drinking water not safe. Probably contaminated and/or lead pipes. The facility has provided the pod with two large, electric, freestanding, stainless steel pots. The inmates fill these from the normal water line, as needed. The inmates have been told this is to keep wear down on the microwaves, when heating water for noodles, etc. The water in these pots are not boiled, but very hot. More safety concerns, not only contamination but burn issues. Ice is brought in by the guards, from unknown source. Allegedly 'as needed'.
Do not have any info on medical facilities, at this time.
Never expected 2 or 3 star accommodation, but we treat animals with more dignity.
Google northwest Indiana Times newspaper for more information at nwitimes.com. articles relating to, Westville Correctional Officers and Aramark Food Services.
