New York state's 52,000 inmates will receive tablets like this one from the company JPay, the state corrections department announced Wednesday. The tablets will allow inmates to access educational materials and also buy eBooks and music. (JPay's website)
I like the idea that since they are free everyone will get one. Interesting JPay is giving them away. They must make a buttload of money off the books, music and email.
I wonder if because the DOC isn’t getting any revenue if that might cause any problems using them against the inmates.

I'm happy this is happening.
For my guy, he will be able to keep in contact with his kids better because they like technology and videos etc.
For my brother, he has been out of the loop for so many years, I believe this will help when he is released. He uses a typewriter to send all his letters!
Since they are free, I'm a little worried about charges and fees for everything. No one gives anything for free without looking to make money off of it.
If they are able to download books, it takes care of the package issue they were having. The whole plan needs to be looked completely, but it would solve that one problem.

South Carolina is so far behind! They're still selling radios and oddly rather than support this idea, many people, especially families of those incarcerated believe this is like using an illegal cell phone. They don't understand how the email system is already being used, except they have to go to the kiosk to access it. They don't understand that the libraries within our state prisons are so outdated and they're still taking their GEDs with outdated information! This will be an awesome way for those who want to be able to access information and reading material.
Way to go NY DOC!

They will need to purchase stamps to send out emails. If they want to download stuff. They will probably need money for that as well. It hasnt rolled out yet to the rest of the prisons.
Oh okay he's on his way to downstate waiting in the county he only has 90 days anyways to do I have a question after he has his parole hearing does he stay in the county long
We were able to utilize tablets while he was in the county. He watched movies, listened to music and we were also able to visit via video. This is a great option for families and our loved ones.

Slowly, they seem to be getting to the prisons. He has his tablet now, and can read books and play games. We are waiting for emails, and the ability to download movies. It's been a month.
