Default Helping Friend With Re-Entry

I have a friend in prison in Illinois. He will be getting out in about a year. I am trying to help him find a place to live, hopefully a job. Not sure what I can do that far out. Would rather at least start the ball rolling prior to his release. He is a sex offender, which I know makes things more difficult.

I've reached out to a few places, and some have responded, and then when I provide details never reply. Perhaps I just need to be more persistent.

Any personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

I, personally, have no experience with this to be able to support you. I do, however, want to thank you for being a support for your friend. I know you are doing it out of love, but I am thanking you as a citizen! We need success stories!

That is great that you're willing to help. Is he wanting to stay in Illinois? It's hard for anyone with a conviction to find housing but the SO label is really a deal killer. We are working on housing for my son in GA & even the state sponsored places don't allow them.

You might try reaching out to this advocacy group for help. Illinois Voices are connected with the NARSOL group but this is the Illinois based one.

There is also a connection of theirs called Hands Up Illinois. Here's a link to them http://www.handsupillinois.org/ You can click on the Contact Us link to get in touch with them.

Good luck & bless you for caring for your friend.

There's a brilliant trick I read about here that I wish I had thought of.

To find places that rent to sex offenders, go to the sex offender registry and look at the addresses. Every one of those addresses is a place that let a sex offender live there.
