Default Can Inmates Apply For SSI?

Or do they have to wait until they're released? My LO will never be the same after a gunshot injury. Can he apply while incarcerated? Can he request his medical records from the facilities he has been at?

Dee applied for it as she used to get it before she was in.

He will need to talk to his counselor. Usually the actual application occurs closer to parole. Dee has 79 days left and has only applied in the last 2-3 weeks.

That's part of the reason he is in CDCR from the info I got. His health was a factor in sentencing. I just wonder because he talks about it as if he is sure he will be approved once he applies. I have seen people with cancer or HIV get turned down. What can speed up the process?

I don't understand the bolded portion. He's in prison because of his health?

There is nothing to speed up a disability claim, but if he qualifies he will be back-paid for the time he waited on a decision.

I dont think SSI is paid while someone is incarcerated so he probably wont get back paid for that time. I might be wrong.

He has to apply and then be turned down and then he can hire a disabilty attorney. They will take a percentage of what he gets but its better than nothing.

No, you're correct. I'm sorry. I should have been more clear. The back pay would be dated to his release date. No one qualifies for benefits while in custody.

You can read up on SSI and incarceration here.
