Question How much do prisons charge for the items they sell to inmates?

I was juss curious about this...items like pens, pencils, paper, stamps, hygiene products, etc...

depends where you are...but in texas my husband can get all of that for about $30...to last a month but the toothpast is small & $2.

he can live off of $30 a week comfortably...but its not NECESSARY. He writes daily so he spends alot on stationary.

All facilities are different so your best bet is to ask this in the subform of the prison you are dealing with.

if u ask for a store sheet, he may be even to get one and send to you...my lady has done that for me for me to see myself the prices.....some are the same on the outside and others are higher..

As Patty stated every state has their own store system. Some are run by state employees and others are contracted to outsiders or catalog vendors.
In WA it is operated by state employees and DOC Policy sets a markup of 10% over cost on items under $50 and 15% on more expensive items like TVs. Store lists vary by custody level but usually have 150 items.

The store list is a good idea if you want to check out the prices of lots of different items.

I only know San Quentin California but I have to say it looks like there is a hefty mark up so that someone is making a profit out of the guys in prison.
