Default Need Info on the SHU @ Terre Haute

My son was just placed in the SHU under protective custody.
Can anyone tell me if he would be in there alone? Or, is he placed with other inmates that are in the SHU for violations?
My other question is if you are placed in the SHU in protective custody for no fault of your own why do they limit communication with the family to a 1 a month phone call? That seems so wrong to be punished if you are in protective custody?
Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you

SHU cells have one bed, or 2 or 3 person bunk beds. I was never in TH, although I did visit the shu in other federal penitentiaries. Cell assignments were usually determined by the number of prisoners locked up there at that time.

Administrative segregation, disciplinary seg and protective custody often have different punishment levels, but they are all extremely restrictive. Unfortunately that's the bop way. His best chance may be a transfer to a different prison, one where he will be safe(r) in general population.

Thank you for your comment
My son only has 44 more days until his release date so not enough time to transfer. Upon release he will be heading to a half way house in our state. He was just place in the SHU under protective custody.
So are you saying from your experience that their are different levels in the SHU so he wouldn't be in with inmates who were in their for disciplinary reasons? Is it quieter in the SHU? I would think it would be. That constant roar in the back ground from the other inmates while talking to my son on the phone would drive me crazy it is so loud. If the SHU was quieter I would prefer it personally. In the SHU do they have as many standing counts as they do in the units every few hours?
Thank you again for sharing your experiences. I truly appreciate it.

He definitely should be safer there, and most times the SHU is quieter than general population housing units. Being locked up all the time, either alone or with one cellmate, is massively boring. 44 days of remaining safe (there is some reason why he was placed in PC) is a good solution. I knew a number of guys who "checked in" to avoid any last minute drama, which can result in the loss of earned good time, and a delayed release.

Depending on the prison, PC inmates can have expanded commissary lists, and can qualify for some orderly jobs in the shu, which allow more out of cell time. It's still a lot of sleep or read time, so make sure he has reading material. I had books delivered to me in the shu from Amazon (delivery only by US Mail), and most prisons do have a "book cart", although two of the ones I was in didn't.

Thank you. Your words to a worried mother are very comforting. I hope your mother is proud of you. She certainly should be.
Thank you for the information you have provided me.
I feel due to the circumstances involved, he is in the safest place until his release.
Should they want to return him to his unit or general population in a few weeks he can request to stay where he is can't he for safety reasons? I read that he has that option somewhere. They can't force him to go to general or back to his unit can they?
Thank you again, I am going to Amazon to send him some books now. He sent home all of the ones he had before going to the SHU

Yes he can ask to remain in the SHU. It is up to the prison staff, but they usually accept safety requests (probably because of potential liability). He might be moved to a housing unit away from the troublemakers, but staying in PC is more likely.

I hope they do have a book cart. The prisons that don't are brutal, on purpose.
