Default Midterm elections / Update: Post Midterms 2018

Just opening a thread about midterms. Polls close here in an hour. NYC has had a bunch of issues at the polls. This should be interesting.

I'm very interested in the election results over-all, but especially Beto O'Rourk / Ted Cruz in Texas; Andrew Gillum / Ron DeSantis & Amendment 4 in Florida.

I'm reading comments of people on social media applauding the fact that they don't believe in voting. IF I could be a hermit, I would find a place I could retreat to and escape human interaction. The apathy in this country is disgusting.

I would rather see people stay home than show up and vote straight ticket (regardless of party). I am watching a bloodbath in local judicial races where EXTREMELY qualified and competent judges are being voted out and replaced with inept and unqualified candidates.

And yes, that means that for the next four years, defendants will suffer from poor judges simply because some voters are too short-sighted to take the time to LEARN about candidates for the position.

In South Carolina, what's old is still new as the results are pouring in. People in this state keep voting straight party and for incumbents. We will remain at the bottom in every major category---education, health, and so for, sadly as far as prison and sentencing reform, we're in for a fight in this state.

Good for you...I didn't have any Libertarians in my selection but that was more because I didn't have any that were worthy of the vote. However, as much of a shock as it might be to some here, my ballot was a mix of R's and D's.

At the end of the day, it is about the person and their work ethic. A good elected official listens to their people and votes on their behalf.

I knew the libertarian wasnt going to win. It was more the protest for. I did like his policy ideas though.

Good for that Amendment in Florida. We are so fortunate here in Il that rights are restored as soon as you are released from prison. My husband is sure that Florida's law is the reason why Gore lost the election since all those felons couldn't vote. It will be interesting to see how that would affect things going forward.

Republicans are having a good night in Florida tonight, but 2020 is going to be a different story, once all those million-plus formerly disenfranchised felons finally get to vote.

This amendment does not apply to those with murder or sex offense convictions.

That really is unfortunate, especially considering those convicts tend to have the lowest recidivism rates of any other class of offender, so they really SHOULD be allowed to vote as well.

But as much as I hate to say it, I'm not sure the Amendment would have passed without that exclusion included in. It only ended up passing by a mere 4% margin, and the Republicans were already running attack ads warning of the "dire consequences" of allowing "unrepentant felons" to be allowed to vote. I can only imagine how they would have stirred people up with the fear-mongering by being able to focus on the prospect of sex offenders being restored the right to vote as well. It could have well made the difference in it failing to pass at all.

I was glad to hear Walker is out in WI.
Too bad about Beto.

In CA we voted to keep daylight savings time. Good planning on having it on the ballot just days after changing back to standard time.
I know back when I was in HS during the time of long lines at the gas stations, and you had to fill up on odd or even days depending on your license plates.
They changed the time (temporarily) back to daylight savings and it was so DARK going to school.
That could be a problem, but these days kids dont seem to walk to school anyway.

My hub was able to vote this year.

Its too bad FL didnt allow sex offenders to vote. Maybe they could then get out from under bridges.

And then there is this!!! Hilarious

All those people in FL who can't vote, or will still not be able to vote, should move to a Red state that does allow felons to vote! Honestly, once you go to prison you've served your time and paid the price. Why would a SO not be able to have the right to vote restored? Or even anyone really? I have never gotten that one. But of course, because most of these people would be voting blue and this was just another way for voter suppression!

In Illinois, Rauner conceded within minutes of the polls closing. Not thrilled with Pritzker, but Rauner has got to go down as one of the worst governors in history. He didn't help the problem, but only made it worse. Never learned to work across the aisle, regardless of the fact that we have to deal with Madigan. Smug SOB so glad to see him out. And best, even though not my district, Congressman Roskam, bit the dust. Perfect example of someone who got burned after 2016 for not listening to his constituents on health care, etc. He needed to go. #Proudofmystate Now we just need to get it's act together and get out of financial trouble!

Trump is holding an official news conference later this am. Can't wait to see him say how much of a win it is for them, probably without any mention of the slaughter they took in the House.

And for whomever mentioned that about Walker. Yep, good win in Wisconsin. Another guy who thought he was unbeatable! Looks good for 2020, now just need the right candidate.

One other note - for those of you very interested in prison reform. McConnell supposedly is going to push through the bill in the lame duck session now. He has said he would do it immediately after the election. I haven't seen much talk on PTO about it, but rumor is that it will have the "accurate" good time credit, reduced mandatory sentences for drug crimes, and some other things. Google to see what I'm talking about. I don't think it will help us, because unless it is passed and put into place immediately, my husband will already be out by the time the good credit thing would make a difference - I think it would get him out a week or 10 days early. But for long term prisoners, it can be substantial time off. It has bi-partisan support, so that might be one good thing that comes out of this!!

Part of the issue is parole/probation. And now with some getting lifetime supervision (something else that needs to be looked at) you cant move unless you have approval.

One more question......Centex....I didnt know who to vote in or out in the judges running this time. And there were alot of names on that ballot.
I ended up not voting in that portion. There was no info in the mailing we get from our county.
How are we supposed to know anything about them? (truth I didnt look too hard but I did go check this morning and only saw two names as yes's. I know there were several other names listed.)

Too many people know nothing about a candidate or an issue, vote based on title of or description of issue at the ballot box, or what somebody driving them to vote tells them to do, or emotion, or straight party line. Get out to vote campaigns should be Get informed then Get out to vote.

I agree with Centex's sentiment - stay home rather than just vote straight ticket. Your philosophy on voting is best, IMO. Vote on who and what you have made at least some effort to understand, do not vote on what you have not.
