Default Anybody got a funny phobia?

Not to make light of phobias, which can cause huge problems, but I was wondering if I am the only one with a silly phobia. I am TERRIFIED of needles. Whenever I have to get a shot, I have to take tons of drugs, and have my mom drive in over 300 miles to hold my hand because I get so incapacitated by the fear--and I am a 36 year old woman for goodness sake. It's not funny when it's happening, but I realize it is totally irrational. Anyone else got anything like this?

These are funny. I am not too freaky about spiders, but I sort-of have that with cockroaches. I cannot smush them without thinking I need to throw-up.

What in the heck is an "industrial accident?" Thanks for sharing. It is fun to laugh at ourselves once in awhile.

The undersides of heavy duty paper plates ....

You know, the kind that have that rough, textured, cardboard type feeling. I can't TOUCH them without terror running thru my viens. If I go to an event that has these types of plates I have to get 2-3 napkins, so I can hold the plate without feeling that horrible texture against my fingers/hand and even THEN, I'm a basket case until I can SET it down.

HOWEVER, it does NOT stop me from eating

Okay--I LOVE these answers. MrsD--are you serious? Do you know where that came from? That is the strangest one I have heard to date.

I have NO idea WHY I'm like this! I work with wood and hand sand stuff all the time and I can handle that... I do have to wipe the sawdust from my hands often, but I'm able to do it without a problem. Go figure!

NatureJunkee, an industrial accident would be like if you're working in a factory and your arm gets cut off in one of the machines or you work near a crane and something falls on you and kills you. I have no idea where I got that from, but I did drive a forklift for a part-time job for a few years. I never got hurt, but did think about it sometimes. Once I hit age 18, I knew I'd be ok.

My Sweetie doesn't like medical needles, but he can get tattoos and even tattoos himself sometimes. THAT's funny!!

I don't have any funny phobias, but I'm scared of deep water, heights, and large crowds.

Oh, do I ever...I'm the Phobia Queen!

Cotton, especially when it goes "crunch"....you guys should see my face when I get a perm and the hairdresser has to tuck those long strips of cotton under the curlers...ZOWIE....I can hardly stand it! To clean my ears with Q-Tips, I have to first run them under a little water. If you stuck a dry one in my ear, I'd probably pass out. Someday, the wrong person will find out my little secret, and mug me with a cotton ball.

Velvet...or sandwashed silk (bleeeeah). When she was much younger, my daughter would wear those pretty holiday dresses every year, and someone else would have to help her get ready because I couldn't stand it if my hand accidentally brushed against the fabric.....eeeeeeeeeek!

Public restrooms....ours at work are so filthy, I go home with a stomachache almost every day because I won't use them unless it's an emergency. Some people are such pigs, it makes me wonder what kind of rock they were raised under.

The sound of a metal fork scraping against a china plate....it sends me running from the room. Literally.

Fire...although not a "funny" phobia, it makes me drive everyone nuts because I always think I smell something burning. It's particularly tiresome during woodstove season here in New England--my family is always happy to see spring arrive

Nose-by-products, or "boogers", as most folks call them. Working in customer service, I get to see some pretty disgusting examples of personal hygeine (or lack thereof), and it makes me want to leap over the counter and smack some parents when their child is digging for Lost Treasure, and they don't do anything to stop them. I always have a can of Lysol on standby, because 99% of the time, said child will then proceed to drag their fingers across my counter as they go "buh-bye". {{{shudder}}}

People touching my food....and it doesn't matter who it is, either. Husband, child, parent--anyone. If you want to try something I have, I'll gladly hand you some....but please, don't EVER touch my plate yourself. Just ask my co-worker who did this not once, but TWICE in one day--she had to go home and change after I threw my plate of Chinese food at her. I figured if she wanted it so badly, she should have it. *evil grin* She no longer works for my store...wonder why?

LOL, I'm sure I have a few more before it's over!

Susan in Providence, eating alone this evening...whew!

These are great! We all seem to be functioning really well for having so many "issues."

Denise: I have the same thing as Bill. I had no problem getting my tattoo--it is a medical needle thing.

weird phobias....... ohh ya ready for this...!!!!

I can not stand cotton balls..near me or touching one. I can't pull it out of a med container... I have to use a fork and just thinking about it now every hair on my body is standing up.. it gives me that metal taste in my mouth..like I'm chewing on tin foil.. which I rather do then touch a cotton ball....
Hahahaha go Ahead Nature laugh hard...lol

I am terrified of spiders, and mice. Even though I'm all of 114lbs and the mouse is barely a lb, go figure. I cannot step on cockroaches or any hard shell bug because when they go crunch it gives me the chills. Yuck just thinking about it.

Wink huh...

Glass. I can't touch it. I makes me want to throw up. It's gritty (although everyone claims that its smooth) and it's cold and ...OH MY GOD, I can't explain it (trust me, much money and hours of therapy couldn't get me too) I hate it. Not a glass cup in this house. And If I HAVE to touch it, it makes me cringe just like finger nails done a chalk board, but I will wear gloves if there's no choice but to handle it.
I have one more, but I'm not sure that it's really that weird. I can't stand my wet hair on my back after a shower or swimming, or my hands to be wet. Same finger nail chalk - board feeling.

I hate the dark. I always think I am being followed. Watch to many scary movies I guess. Also heights that comes from when I was child I was in a legcast and was scared to go down the stairs at a friends asked for a family friend to carry me down he had me cradled in his arms and flung me out over the stairs like he was going to throw me. If anyone drinks out of my cup or eats off of my plate yuck my germs are mine but someone elses eww. And the newest one is my dreams ever since he has been locked up they have been really bad and some very scary.

OOooooh, here's a great one...LMAO!

My house is pretty old, and in my basement, there's a sub-cellar that was used for wine by the previous owners in the 60's (my family has owned it since then). Growing up here, my sister and I used to torture each other about what hell-bent demons MIGHT be living in there!!! We got endless miles of screams from that, LOL...

Well, I took over the house from my Mom 13 years ago, and I have never, ever opened the sub-cellar since the day I moved in. It has a big latch on the outside, and I pushed all kinds of heavy boxes and furniture up against the door, just in case...I mean, you never know, right? Well, I've put the house on the market, and am getting used to the whole "open house" procedure....but I never expected what happened one night last week.

I went down to the basement to do some laundry. The sub-cellar door is to the right at the bottom of the stairs, and I usually try not to look at it (LMAO)....the washer and dryer are to the left, and well-lit, thank goodness. I switched the loads over, and turned to head back up the stairs....when my heart turned to steel. The door to the sub-cellar was open about an inch....and there was a light shining from inside!!!! Gaaaaaaah! Now what???? To get back upstairs, you have to walk by that door; there's no other way. I bet I froze for 5 minutes or better. I called my dog Quincy to come down, figuring he would protect me.....the coward, he stopped at the top of the basement stairs! Damn, he must know IT escaped!!!!

The only thing that finally made me move was the fear that whatever might have (by now) ESCAPED from that room would definitely get me if I just stood there. LOL! So, I ran right towards that door and threw all my weight against it (how it didn't break in two, I don't know), smashed the latch down, pushed a headboard across the door, and ran like hell up those stairs to the first floor. I slammed the basement door, too, and then stood all hunched over in the middle of my kitchen, panting like a fool....only to realize the light must still be on! Sure enough, when I went down to do more laundry, I could see the light from behind the door, which only made me even MORE paranoid!

Apparently, the one of the prospective buyers wanted to see what was in that room....but forgot to shut off the light and close the door. My Mom is still rolling on the floor, as is my sister....they'll never let me forget this one!

Oh, and the realtor came by when I was at work the next day, and turned it off. He thought it was hysterical, too, and apologized a million times for traumatizing me

LMAO,
Susan in Providence

Ohh my goodness, that is crazy. I get scared to go in my basement too, because it is not well lit. I run down there and run back up as fast as I can. I only go down there because my washer and dryer are down there. But I get so scared.

Susan: That is hysterical! Aren't you even curious about what's down there?

This thread is suprising me. Where are all of the claustrophobics? You have to be out there. Doesn't anyone have that thing where you are scared to stand near the side of a cliff because you are afraid that you will make yourself jump? I guess I should have realized that women as unique as we are would have some unique phobias . . .

Bats...had one in the washing machine in the scary basement...had one upstairs in a wastebasket...had them in the walls...thought it was a person scratching to get in...I was dying from fear...I walked around with a tennis racket, just in case one attacked me! I'm not even sure where I got the tennis racket "Bat Attack" weapon idea from! :fb:

for me it's snakes.i live in area where we have alot of snakes.poisonous and non-poisonous.i don't even care to be around them when they behind glass even.it's so bad that i once ran my 4x4 truck off the road into a ditch because a snake was in the middle of the road, like it could get to me yeah right.then last fall one was laying on my back step when i got home from a school function with the kids, all i could do was grab my smallest dog slam the door shut and run around screaming.my youngest daughter called my foster sons, she didn't even have tell him what was wrong,he heard me and figured it out,my middle daughter calmly went around from the front yard and through the fence to retrieve our other dog that jumped out the back door trying to catch the nasty snake.while i was still running around screaming scaring the little dog to death.oh yeah,my calm middle daughter that has know fear of snakes or bugs, freaks out and can't breath whenever a clown gets near her...go figure.
