Talking Arkansas Man Becomes 1st In U.S. Convicted Under Hate Crimes Law

A Green Forest man -- Sean Popejoy, 19 -- has become the first person in the United States to be convicted under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release today [May 16, 2011].

The act is named for two men who were murdered because of racial or sexual preference hatred. Shepard was a young gay men left to die tied to a fence and Byrd, a black man, was killed when he was dragged behind a truck by three white men.

Read the entire DOJ news release here.

GLBT men and women should be treated with the same respect as everyone else.
