The worst jail in the world is the one you are in.

I have a son in serving 18 months. He is 19 years old. He's lost nearly 40 pounds on the sandwhich diet. Otherwise he's fine. Plays a lot of card games and reads books. His biggest complaints: The food of course. It's always cold. It's loud at night. They hardly go outside. What can you do... just be patient and hope it changes them.

So far, my experience with Isabella County has been limited, but I'm sure I'll see more as time goes on, as that's where my son is, since being arrested a few days ago. So far, the staff/officers have treated me kindly, explained anything I asked them to, and they were good enough to talk to my son's dad on the phone, and allow him to talk to our son, since he's in another state and can't visit - but they only allowed it once, and now my son has to call his dad, he can't get any calls in. His dad was told that they are kind of watching out for my son because of his age, so that meant a lot too. The lobby is kind of dingy, but it's a jail, I don't expect it to be pretty - I don't think any of them are. I guess I will find out more when I go to visit him this week. But for being a small county jail, I think they do the best they can.

What I know so far (and I'd love to see someone from the jail update the information in the archives here for the jail, because it's outdated):

-inmates can only receive postcards, no cards or letters or other mail (exceptions made for legal and court documents)
-visitation times are 20 minutes per visitor - the posting in the archives here says you can only visit once a week, but I don't know if that's true. Going to check it out.
-there is a "package program" where you can order items to be delivered to your inmate - stationary, comissary items, clothing, etc. Obviously it's only items that are allowed by the jail, so it's socks, underwear, t-shirts, sandals.

It is my sincere hope that when he is sentenced that he has done enough time already in Isabella at that point that he ends up finishing his sentence there and we don't have to worry about him being moved elsewhere - it's the only hope I can cling to at this point.

OAKLAND COUNTY JAIL is the worst! Everyone is saying Wayne is bad, but OCJ is worse than Wayne. Before I'd ever been to jail, my friends who had been were comparing OCJ to other counties and everyone said it was worse than the surrounding counties (Macomb and Wayne). Then I got locked up, me and my boyfriend both, in Oakland County... and my cellmate had been to Wayne County Jail as well and said OCJ was worse. I HATE that place. The food is trash, my mouth might has well have been a garbage can. As far as the inmates go, WCJ might be worse just because of Detroit. But as far as the actual facility, the food, the deputies, and how you are treated, OCJ is the worst. My mom's been to OCJ and Kent County jail among others, and she agrees that OCJ is the worst. Don't ever commit a crime in Oakland County lol... the county may be rich, but none of its money apparently goes to the jail!

My grandson was in MCJ and just before he left for prison they got hot food back, not the best, but it is hot. You are right, it is cold there at night. Have you thought about putting money in his account so he can buy food?
Good luck !!

You are most correct. Oakland County Jail is by far worst than Wayne County, and most all others in the great state of Michigan. The food has no seasoning because the " Trustees " take it all for themselves, and by ALL, I MEAN ALL. No salt, No pepper. One good thing about the commisarry system in this jail is that It is ran by a company called armark, and therefore you will not be ripped off, until it is inside your cell heh...

So I spent over 30 days within OCJ, and 28 of those days I was in what they call a TEN-MAN cell, for 28 days I never once left this cell, and that is what we like to call " AGAINST FEDERAL LAW! " I wish there was a way to get awareness out on the quality of incarceration within this jail, but im afraid its probably impossible.

You are treated like animals, caged and left to rot.

Fuck OCJ.

Well from most of what my fiance' says, MRF is like a giant summer camp (although cold right now)-with a few scuffles here and there. So like summer camp. The food is OK, the cells are just that and nothing more, they have a lot of freedom, he gets to take classes, go to church, read, write, watch TV, play cards and games, talk on the phone til midnight, shovel snow, work-out and mmm...he looks dandy The CO's are fair, for the most part. He says the younger white males are generally the assholes with something to prove. Every single one of the CO's (-minus one-) have been polite, helpful and conversational with me and both if us when together. It's all about respect and "generally" if you show respect, you will be treated with respect. Although my man has a temper, he thankfully for him-also has manners. That surely helps. My only wish....they had good-time so I could have my good-time a whole lot sooner, lol!!!

I can only compare three institutions. I served time in Kent County and Newago County jails. Between those two, I prefered Newago. In Newago you eat in your cell and usually only leave once or twice unlike Kent but you have a phone and cable TV in your cell that you could choose the channel. Now Newago is also a federal holding facility so the do have some real bag guys in there. When I first got to Newago (1998), I was put in an 8 man on the federal side with a bunch of the Wealthy Street Boys after they were busted up. It took a suicide threat to get thrown in the tank for a couple of days and then over to 4 man county side. I didn't mind not leaving my cell as I had the TV and also worked Bible studies. In Newago you could order full size suave shampoo and conditioner instead of 8 oz off brand crap that they sell in Kent.

Now the third...Honor Camp! Kent County Honor Camp beat all. Back then they didn't have the fence and razor wire. I went out there December of 98 and left February of 99. I worked shovelling snow at the jail, splitting wood for the camp to use, and did a stint in the kitchen. We had an open dorm style living quarters complete with a game room and a tv/movie room.

Anyway, there is my two cents.

Default jackson

My bf is in Jackson downtown..the Heat isnt working and they wont let him go out side at all. And your right about the food.its horrible and the people in Jackson are really rude and they make you wait in a small rooom with 6 chairs. You cant get a list of what the store has wither.it sucks
uote=Never Forget;5219686]Jackson County has 2 jails. The downtown jail is a literal crap hole dungeon. Over crowded, nasty the staff largely do not care what happens in the "hotels" as long as the screaming doesnt get too bad... They now use the downtown jail as the "high" security jail.

Now saying that....

The other jail in Jackson County on Chanter Road is nice. It was supposed to be a Camp like facility for women, however the County of Jackson leases it. There are 4 wings, Red, Green, Blue, Yellow... They are cubes without lockers. Men are not dressed in one piece covealls liek downtown. Here you get a set or orange scrubs, can have street tennis shoes.

They yard is open all day mostly, chow hall is a seprate building. Now the food is horrible. They contract with an outside company to provide the food, and this company is nasty, cheap and the food is really bad.

The staff are by and large ok, 99 percent of them dont go out of their way to mess with you, however visiting sucks. You visit through glass on a phone, they give you 15 minutes weekly and half the time you are lucky if you get 10 minutes. There is a TV room with a microwave, lots of phones. Basically it is laid out like Cooper street as far as living units.

So I would pick Jackson County Chanter Road facility as the gold star jail..
I have not been to any others.
LOL...[/quote]

Thumbs down Ocj

I was in macomb county jail in jan 2010 and it was absolutely horrible. The most dirty, disgusting, loud, obnoxious, pos ever. It is in the worse condition of the tri-county, but despite the bagged breakfast, lunch and dinners we had, and overflowing of pipes. (literally walking through shit) the inmates who had been to other county jails insisted that oakland county is the worse. They say they are the most harsh out of them all. Everyone in macomb county says DO NOT CATCH A CASE IN OAKLAND COUNTY. When i was on probation in macomb and moved out to oakland, they were gonna switch my probation over to oakland county, but even my own PO said she hears they are horrible, so she gave me call-in instead. My point Macomb is shit, but Oakland is the worse of the tri-county. Don't ask me about any others though.
Anyway, when you guys are talking about wayne county, which division are you talking about? old wayne county jail? baird? or william dickerson?

I realize this thread is old. but I'll put my 2 cents worth. I believe Oakland County is they worst because of the CO's and the conditions. BUT Genesee County (Flint) is by far the worst when it comes to violence and gangs.

In regards to Ottawa County jail, they are keeping a man in a holding tank for the past week with only a mat and feeding him a bologna sandwich, apple sauce and a bag of chips for the past 7 days. He was only allowed to take a shower once after about 4 days. He is holding up but to me that just seems inhumane and unconstitutional. Has anyone else had a love one or themselves experience something like this? How was it handled? I do not have experience in this area so I really don’t know if this is truly acceptable. But to me it seems like it would not be and that they are trying to break him mentally.
