You need to understand that a lot of the things the prisoners have at their
disposal is taken out of the prisoner fund, which is made up from items that
are purchased (vending machines, etc) It always sounds like they really have
it good in there, but we and they pay for most of it. I believe they do get a
small stipend if they are doing a class. Mine was doing a horticulture class and
did receive a stipend.

I know this sounds crazy, but if 7.00 is an encentive to attend a class to better their lives, and they go, and learn stuff they can use in life, that's 7.00 well spent in my opinion. 7.00 doesn't buy much, I'd rather they be in a class than causing another person grief.

A large percentage of the prison population doesn't have a GED or high school diploma, often can't read. One of the best indicators of being able to get a job, before or after prison, is being literate. In effect, they're trying to pay them not to come back.

I understand they use it as an Incentive; I guess I'm torn because we hear so much about cutting cost in prison and prison overcrowding does not help the prison budget. I've heard about efforts to cut down on the budget i.e.... cutting down on meals (from 3 to 2 time a day on weekends; some prisons do this). In Michigan, hundreds (if not thousands) of food service workers were laid off because MDOC switched food service to a private service (Aramark) to save millions of $$. In doing this, it has tremendously increased the security risk to our LO, by Aramark worker abusing the inmates, sexually also Aramark employees are bringing in contra band. At one prison, Aramark workers can actually write tickets to our loved one. they don't even work for the MDOC!

Oh... I stand corrected. It is $7.00 per month ($0.50 per class) NOT $7.00 per week.

One of the points of lowering the overcrowding pressure is to NOT get them coming back. With a little education and maybe even a sense of accomplishment, they might not come back.
