Default Letters from Maine Supermax

Dear friends,

For the last six months, our community radio station has aired weekly letters sent us by a Maine state prison inmate who had been sent from the prison's general population to the state Supermax for a six month stint for possession of forbidden tools. The letters graphically describe the conditions and behavior good and ill of guards, staff and administrators. With his permission, we have put scans of his letters and related information on the web at:
http://www.penbay.org/WRFR/prisonpro...eanebrown.html

He and I are curious whether conditions at supermax facilities elsewhere are similar.

His letters attracted the attention of a New England investigative reporter who last month wrote a 2 article series that included interviews with the inmate (and two other supermaxed inmates) as well as the Corrections commissioner and others. (on the above webpage) The chair of the Maine state legislature's criminal justice committee has made noises about reform; we'd like that to happen, but lack models of situations in other state prisons. In particular, a tightening up of the decisionmaking process that decides whether or not to send a general population inmate to Supermax, for how long, and whether it may be renewed.

Best wishes
