Default I Need Inmate Writings

I am going to be guest-teaching a high school writing class. The class is called "Writing the Body" and my topic, appropriately enough, will be "Punished Bodies: Writers in Prison."

If anyone has any poignant pieces of writing from their inmates they'd like to share, please let me know via PM. I won't be doing the class until sometime in November. I'm looking for poems, journal entries, essays, and even stories that deal with their experience in prison in some way: escapist (not escaping physically, but mentally); anger; remorse; denial; hope; despair; etc.

Thanks.
Jims

I will see what I have and get an ok on it. If I get that ok I will PM you and let you know. Working with young minds and showing them the reality of it seems like it would be a great idea!

Thanks, Clee. And when you ask for permission to use a piece of writing, let him know I won't be using full names or identifying information on most of the pieces unless the inmate specifically requests that I do.

There is a book called Lockdown Prison Heart. It is a book made entirely of Essays written by inmates who are incarcerated in Illinois. It is all about how they feel and how they have changed and how prison has shaped them into what they now are, their sorrow at what they did etc. etc.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I have so many wonderful, poignant pieces of writings from inmates. Jude, that book you recommended is a good one. Common themes throughout; obviously since they had to respond to two particular questions. But even so, the essays have many common threads. Thank you for recommending it.

Glad to have helped. I can't recall if it was just Illinois you wanted writings of? If not, Welcome to Hell is absolutely brilliant as it is a book made up of letters from inmates.
