Default Letter was returned because it was on unlined paper?

I wrote to Rockville, Terre Haute IN and my letter was returned because it was on unlined paper. wth?
Does this mean letters must be hand written? Or can I use my computer as I did when she was in county and just print it out on unlined paper?
thanks in advance!

Looks like they changed the policy in April this yr.
White envelopes only, on white lined paper (no photocopies)

Thank you! At least it doesn't have to be hand written. Pfft, we bought a new printer so I could send colored printouts. now, not allowed

Same here! It's also not allowed to print lined paper - was not given to my friend! Means it must be hand written. for whatever reason :-(

I am still not sure. What I saw is about the paper used, not whether it was written by hand or not. I sent on written by hand on yes, original lined composition paper but I am also going to try to print out on that paper and see what happens. I talk with my fingers and keyboard!

I've tried both. Before the first April it was no problem. Original lined paper works, because it was handwritten. Than I tried to write with hand on printed lined paper, was not allowed because they said it is a "photocopy" (the updated the guidelines, you can see that a photocopied lined paper is not allowed, postcards are not longer allowed but photos works... I write every week)! Would be nice if you give me a feedback if it works, when you use original lined paper and write with the keyboard - that would be great when it works. Than I would try the same. Good luck.

The reason for the change is due to paper being soaked in K2 liquid which is very hard to detect. The reason they are only accepting lined paper is that when the K2 liquid is applied it causes the lines to fade / run which is detectible.

I do not know if you will be allowed to print on lined paper and get that through the mailroom.

Here is a link to a news article on the policy change:

Take Care Chris

I am using white legal pads. Clean tear offs and larger than composition paper..so easier to print.
Still trying to find out if there is a page limit.

I'm cool with this one. May not be convenient but ANYTHING to keep K2 out. That's some nasty shit...for everyone around.

Everything I sent on lined paper got through to my niece. I send her lyrics to songs from my computer printer on lined paper. I've sent her a meme photo that meant a lot to her prior to incarceration. I also print my typed letters onto lined paper. All have made it to her. I'm assuming as long as it is lined paper and not regular printer paper it is approved. She also said I can send photos printed from my computer. I've not tried yet, but when I do I will send separately from letters so if it is not allowed then only the prints are denied.

You may be able to print it on photo paper and try that. If it doesn't go through then you can always print it on lined paper and resend it.
