Default Husband is sick...

Husband caught a sore throats and fever he says his celly is peeing blood and they just tell him to drink water so he thinks that if something that serious gets passed by why would they even care if he has a fever... things like this worry me as I know this could be anything from a mild cold all the way to infections like strep throat I'm worried about him... any remedies you guys know that he can try? Or advice? Thanks in advance!

If it's strep, only antibiotics can clear that up. He may get some relief by gargling with warm salt water. Otherwise Tylenol or Advil for the fever and sore throat and wait it out. He might also nasal spray. These are things my guy can get at commissary so I'm not sure what your husband can purchase.

Thank you very much AndyS I'm guessing he can only get antibiotics by going to the doctor? This is very valuable advice once again thank you!

You are correct about the antibiotics, they will have to be prescribed by the prison's medical folks. California prison healthcare is under federal court supervision since it was so substandard. If he believes his medical issues are being ignored, or treated inappropriately, he can file an inmate grievance. Here's a link to the federal receiver's information.

Even if they aren't calling him to medical, he needs to be putting in a request to see them. It creates a paper trail. In our experience, they usually give him a bag full of Tylenol (maybe a few Mucinex if there's congestion) and send them back. They may swab his throat if he focuses on that symptom above others. Tell him to keep submitting requests to see medical until his issue is resolved.

It's a hassle, but it's the only way to get it done and it helps keep CDCR accountable. Oversight can't hold them responsible if there's no documentation. I hope his cellie does the same. :/

I hope he is, too!

Dealing with medical can be a real pain (ha! puns...).

The only time mine saw immediate care was this last time when he had a terrible chest cold. He wrote on the slip (honestly, but not how they read it) that he had chest pain. Well yeah, from coughing. But they loaded him up and rushed him to the infirmary like he was having a heart attack. LOL I'm not saying cry wolf, that's a bad idea. But they do usually have to be convinced it's serious.
