Default ARTICLE: Meth bill on hold as sponsor seeks compromise

PHOENIX The bill intended to help combat the illegal stimulant methamphetamine has been placed on hold while the sponsor tries to work out of a compromise.

Senator Barbara Leff says she arranged for a scheduled final House vote on her bill to be delayed because that chamber yesterday amended it to include provisions sought by Attorney General Terry Goddard but opposed by Leff.

Leff says she can't accept Goddard-backed provisions to only allow pharmacy sales of some cold medicines which contain chemicals used in making methamphetamine and to also require buyers to show identification and sign a logbook.

Those provisions would expose law-abiding customers to identity theft and be ineffective in stopping illegal meth production because criminals routinely use fake I-D's and the cold medicines can be smuggled from Mexico.

Leff says she's willing to have those cold medicines containing the decongestant pseudoephedrine taken off shelves and available only behind store counters -- the same sales restrictions now placed on cigarettes.
