Hicks column: Unless those at the top act, South Carolina prisons will perpetuate crime problem
"South Carolina prisons are not rehabilitating criminals — they’re training them.
In most of the state’s roughest correctional facilities, the yard is not so different from life on the street. Inmates may have to sell drugs to survive, join a gang for protection and constantly watch their manners — and their six — to avoid brutal assault.
Solitary confinement is their only peace.
The riot last week at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, which left 7 dead and 22 seriously wounded, is only the latest evidence of a failing system that not only perpetuates a criminal lifestyle, but can leave parolees suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and serious trust issues."

It is dangerous, when Sterling uses a human life to push his agenda. Instead of informing the Public that SCDC will do everything to Remove & Eliminate the knives, shanks, axes and other deadly weapons from the prisoners , he cries about Cell Phones. Cell Phones have created accountability & transparency nationwide, (Walter Scott) since SCDC employees don't wear body cameras, cell phones allow inmates to document & share the inhuman treatment, conditions & violence inside Sterling's fortresses. I compared McMaster & Sterling's press conference to Lenin & Stalin, the iron curtain, democracy dies in darkness.
Coroner reported all 7 inmates at Lee Correctional, died from stab wounds. Knives killed 7, not phones. (COD, Cell Phone puncture wounds to abdomen & head)
Of the 22 injured, any of those die at the hospital?
Where is the transparency Mr. Sterling?
