Default Air Conditioning in South Carolina Department of Corrections Prisons?

Are there still institutions in our state that does not have air conditioning? I was just curious. I know that where my son is at, it is nice and cool and I was just thinking of other inmates where it could be sweltering. God Bless them.

I'm not sure if there are places without AC but I do know there are several institutions without "working AC's!" I don' know how they can stand it in the dead of summer...it has to be smoldering hot!

I knew that at one time Perry didn't have A/C and someone had said that Tyger River doesn't but I'm not sure either.

One dorm at Lee CI don't have air. It's considered the "honor" dorm. I guess they get more privileges for going there in that dorm.

Stevenson CI wards are not air-conditioned. They have huge fans that blow around hot air.

Oh yeah, Broad River CI is well-airconditioned and Kirkland R&E is about to be all-airconditioned soon too. I think that a few of their units don't have AC right now.

I was wondering if Turbeville has AC because I know the last two times I have been to visit it feels warm in the visitor's room and I am usually a cold-natured person

Where my husband is in Evans there is no AC. He said the wing/unit is actually condemned but they keep prisoners in there anyway. They had no running water for a couple of days last month. He said there is no heat there in the winter either.

Default Which South Carolina Prisons Have Air-conditioning?

Please post facilities that you know about as to whether they are air-conditioned or not.

Wateree River IS NOT.

I just read a post that said that Broad River IS. Now how is that? How is a Level 3 air-conditioned and a Level 2 that is operated like a Level 1 NOT?

They all should be I think.

The BOTTOM LINE is they ALL should be air conditioned...whether it's a level sub zero vs. a level 3!! It has been very HOTTTand I can only imagine what they are enduring!

The last time I read about THIS PROBLEM, there were only a few facilities WITH air! Hopefully, your survey will reveal that SCDC has invested in air conditioning for these places!

I cannot believe that SCDC gets away with that for one minute! The temp has been crazy and to think this is going on in 2006 is a disgrace...in my opinion! :shake:

Wateree Yside is NOT they have huge fans blowining in from the HORSE BARNS. Can you imagine the smell?

Kirkland R & E is NOT but It seams like someone said the regular inmate side of it IS.

Ridgeland IS
Manning IS
Turbeville IS
God I know too many people that are locked up. That proves it. I do know that certain places are not a/ced intentionally. They like to play those games don't kid yourself.

Northside is NOT.

That seems like it would be a breeding ground for bacteria & disease. You know I did some volunteer work years ago and thinking back it is really sad that the Animal Shelter has A/C and the prisons do not.

I know that Lee is. Perry is on the Road Crew side anyways.
I really think it's inhumane. The Control Rooms have air.

Here's the rub. Most institutions are like Kirkland R & E - part is a/c and part is not. Manning has a/c but I believe there is a part that is not. Lee has a/c but the honor dorm (Richland) does not. Evans has a/c but at least 1 dorm does not have it. In other words, the part we have a loved one is may be a/c but that doesn't mean there isn't another part of the institution that does not have a/c. So, I pretty much assume there are few institutions that are fully air conditioned. I think the problem is money - or so SCDC says. If it comes down to building new prisons to hold more inmates or air conditioning the ones they have but then having over crowding because the money got spent on a/c instead of making more room - well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that they build more room. I'm not saying that I agree with no a/c but the job of SCDC is not comfort but housing. The horrible thing is that it takes so long to get fans. My friend sent the money to order a fan for his loved one almost 2 months ago and was told that since that was a special order it would take 6 - 8 weeks to get it. If SCDC knows there is no a/c then why don't they have a good supply of fans on hand for purchase? Or how difficult is it to go down to Wally World and buy some? They are making a huge profit off the fans (double what they can be bought for in stores) so the gas and personnel to go get them, well, take it out of the profit.

There is no figuring out most of what SCDC does and figuring out how they decide which dorms to put a/c in is no different. Like I wrote before, the honor dorm (workers at PI) at Lee are in the Richland dorm - no a/c but the punishment dorm has it. Go figure!

Joshsmom, I realize it is not SCDC's job to provide comfort for inmates, but air is a health issue...especially in the South!

I guess I see it differently...it is their job to provide adequate housing that does not pose a threat to life. Inadequate ventilation is putting inmates and workers at risk for heat related emergencies. Just my

I know that it is unbearable with no AC. My son has been at Wateree this summer and last. He says the only way to survive is to take cold showers every 2 hours, but he is surviving and, hopefully this will be his last summer there. (Still working on county). They did install AC in the visitation room last year. When he first got there, July, they put him straight out on the farm to work and the first day, he got such a bad case of sun poisining on his lips and head that he could not work for a week or two. They do not take into consideration that when someone is in county (no sun at all), they need to get used to it gradually.

He is coming back for another PCR hearing in August, same judge, pray for him.

Everything is starting to get back to normal for me (after my heart attack). I actually did yardwork this morning. Hope everything is going in favor for you all. Thinking of you all.......Susie

Glad you're doing well, Suzie! As long as your son is an M01-B, the jail has bed space, he doesn't have work or medical holds, his "victims" don't object, and you can walk uphill backwards in the snow while holding your breath and counting backwards from 10,000 (LOL!) you shouldn't have any problem getting him there. I wish you well!

I just got a note from a friend at Stevenson CI in Columbia. There is no a/c there. At Yazoo City in MS, they kept the air around 80 degrees until they had an outbreak of staph infections, now they have a/c again.

Pooh, I was told just last week while waiting in line at visit that Kershaw is air-conditioned by a wife of a former Kershaw inmate.
