Have anyone heard about Premier Commissary suppose to take over for MDOC? If so, do anyone know how I can obtain a copy of the order sheet?

While I'm not familiar with Mississippi, I just can't fathom that any facility could stop canteen even if they wanted to

Yes, actually the front page of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger the other day had an article where the Commissioner of the MS Dept. of Corrections, Marshall Fisher, suggested that commissary is more problem than it's worth and he is thinking about dropping it altogether. Here's the link:

http://www.clarionledger.com/story/n...lose/77108256/

Part of the problem, I think, is the corruption that revolves around the commissary (and the downfall of the previous Commissioner). Fisher thinks it just plays into the hands of the gangs. Well, why don't they do something about the gangs, and then maybe there wouldn't be that problem! And he says there were assaults against correctional officers in the past year, without saying how many of those assaults were connected with the commissary.

And it's a joke that MDOC claims to provide for the needs of the inmates, without the need for commissary. What we'll have is starving and stinking prisoners.

I think stopping commissary will lead to wholesale rioting in the prisons.

My nephew is in MSP and from my understanding MDOC is planning to eliminate commissary altogether.

The Commissioner can almost do whatever he wants at the prisons. It'll be viewed as cost-saving and good for security by the legislature and law enforcement, in all likelihood. The profits from commissary (the $$ that don't go in the pockets of corrupt bureaucrats and politicians) go to the inmate fund, so there will be that much less for poor prisoners. What's next--eliminate mail, phone calls and personal visits? They are all "security risks" in some form or another. They already spend among the least in the nation per prisoner for food and necessities.

Ummm, my best guess is that all the kickbacks don't make it to the inmate fund anyway and the facility will surely miss the added funds. Also, as for their "security," how secure is a prison housing inmates without the extra necessities that commissary supplies??

Hey, I know I'm preaching to the choir...but I just can't wrap my head around No Commissary at all

fisher is about to start a lot of violence, unnecessary violence bc of this. hes not looking at the bigger picture. they already are not fed enough, and then to take away what little extra they can get, its not going to be pretty.

Marshall Fisher does not realize he has gang infested prisons with corrupt officers. Deciding to take away commissary will only force inmates to use another source for bartering. Food trays will be used as pay off for debts. The guards will smuggle more junk food into the prisons for a kick back. Mr. Fischer needs to address the safety, gangs and corrupt guards, not remove commissary. If every commissioner had to go undercover and serve 30 days as an inmate, they would know what the problems are in the MS prisons, and it is not commissary.
