Thank you so much for the reply. It was very helpful. Yes I will be driving to Atlanta in June to make my first visit. He's been at USP Atlanta for a some months now. I'm going to visit on a Saturday morning. I will make sure to have proper identification and I will try and arrive before or by 7:45. It's my first time ever visiting someone in prison so I'm kind of nervous plus I will be alone. I will probably wear jeans, cute shirt with sleeves and some sneakers. I will all jewelry and cell phone in the car. Do you think it will be okay if I write his information (like his number)down on paper so I will remember? I looked the prison up online and it did say it was in a pretty bad neighborhood. Where should I get a hotel room at?? I actually had booked a room in Buckhead so I can make sure I have one that weekend. I don't want to have to drive over 20 or 30 minutes to the prison but I want to stay in a upscale hotel. Are you allowed to hug once the inmate comes out? Also, once I go through the check in process and they escort us into the visitor room, will the inmates already be there? Or will they bring them out after they have placed us in the room? So the inmates are allowed to have snacks out the vendor machine? Do the inmates all come out at once or one by one? I plan to visit from 8-12. When I'm ready to leave, how does that process work? I'm sorry that I have so many questions, but all of this is new do me and I just want to be sure I'm doing everything right. Thanks a lot. By the way, is your boyfriend still at USP Atlanta?
FBOPNOMORE has already answered most of your questions, I will try to answer the rest.

Your outfit sounds like you will be just fine.

Yes, you can write his information (and your car info if needed) on a piece of paper. Just stick it in your pocket when you are done.

Usually you will get to the visiting room before your inmate does. The CO will tell you where to sit, and when your inmate gets there, he will look around the room for you and then come to you. The inmates usually arrive in groups of 2 to 5 at a time.

Yes, you are allowed to hug (and kiss) at the beginning of the visit, and again at the end of the visit. You might be allowed to hold hands during the visit (that seems to vary depending on the COs on duty that day). Look around, and if other couples are holding hands, then you should be fine. The worst they will do is tell you (politely) that you can't.

I don't know that you will be able to find a nice hotel in a nice neighborhood that is closer than 20 minutes from the prison. The whole area is kind of scary and run down.

The airport is about 20 minutes away, and you can always find lots of hotel choices near the airport.

The hotel that I used to stay at is the Travelodge Forest Park Atlanta South. The address is 6025 Old Dixie Rd, Forest Park, GA 30297. It is also about 20 minutes away. It isn't anything fancy, but it was clean and cheap and the neighborhood seemed okay. But then I am a rather large guy, so my threshold for "safe" might be a little higher than a single woman traveling alone. You might be better off going for a Holiday Inn or something at the airport.

Here is my tip for finding a hotel in new/strange city: Plug the address in to Google Maps, and then use the streetview feature to go up and down the street(s) in the area and see what kind of neighborhood it is in. You can tell a lot about the neighborhood by the types of businesses around it, and the condition that everything is in. If there are a lot of pawn shops and check cashing places, and there are bars on all the windows... look somewhere else!

My boyfriend is no longer in Atlanta. He transferred to another prison a couple of years ago.

Never be afraid to ask questions. I am always happy to answer anything that I can. That first visit feels intimidating, but you'll realize it isn't nearly as scary as it seems.

If he is there for holdover....He more than likely is in the SHU...and won't be able to have visits and may not be able to make a phone call.

He's been able to email her a couple times a day so I don't think he's in the hole but I was wondering if they only let the layover guys out a limited amount of time maybe

When I was there for a month, we were locked in the cells 23 hours a day, except when they (frequently) claimed they were short on staff, which made it 24. No book cart (excuse was it's too expensive to put donated books out), so cell time was either sleep or look at the walls. I was in a 2 person cell with 5 total inmates, so 3 of us slept on the floor. My opinion was they run Atlanta the way they do because they are extremely nasty.

Not sure what's going on there, or if anything can be done. My friends husband is being held there while in transit to another facility and she has still been getting emails through out the week. Maybe he is not at the camp, but everything at the pen has been "normal" hope you hear from him soon!

My man is at Atlanta usp. We haven't heard of anything going on all week. This morning me and a few other people haven't received emails yet so we're wondering if maybe this is why. What happened over there?

I am curious to know how USP Atlanta is currently operating. My loved one was recently sent there temporarily until he transfer to his official facility but I haven’t heard from him since he’s been there.

If he is going to a half way house, his unit team case manager will set up an unescorted furlough and provide transportation, usually a bus ticket, there. One other possibility, if the CM agrees and writes it into his furlough instructions, is for you to pick him up at the prison and drive him to the HWH. If so, you will have to show current driver's license, registration and insurance. They will also give you a time when you must arrive at the HWH, which can sometimes be sooner than you can drive there.

If he decides to take whatever transportation the bop offers, and you want to ride on the same public conveyance, that also requires prior approval from the CM, Some folks have been sent back to prison when a family member decided to ride on the same bus with their loved one.
